View Full Version : Stingray City: Dive or Snorkel?

Is it worth it to dive or should I just break out the trusty snorkel?

I would dive. I think you can interact with them better that way. Depending on the op and time it might be less crowded too. (Assuming you are not there on a cruise - a good dive op not running a cruise excursion will probably try and avoid busier times and snorkel crowds.)

I would snorkel, the bar is really shallow and the water crystal clear. They really are everywhere. My wife was a stingray magnet so I may be a little biased however ;)

I took these pictures there.

there are 2 areas, the one they dive at is deeper.

I realize that, I guess what I'm saying is this: If you're going to go through the trouble of bringing your gear to GC there are many more places I rather dive than Stingray City when you would have a lot more fun just walking around the sand bar with a mask and snorkel. Diving stingray city would not make for a better experience IMO.

I liked the snorkel.

You get to interact with them more in the shallower water.

the only negative to the snorkel is that there are more people there. but there are more than enough sting rays to visit you to "go around".

If I was going to go to the hassle of lugging gear off a cruise ship for a dive, I'd rather see better stuff than just a bunch of sting rays going by that I could see with a mask/fins/snorkel.

oh dive- if you are with a good op you will also get two meet the resident moray Cataract, and have a bit of a swim

What I was told when I down there is that there are two areas: Stingray City and Stingray sandbar. The sandar is where most snorklers and cruise ships go, which is not the same area where the divers are, generally. We actually opted to go on a North Wall two tanker instead of stingray city. The domesticated stingrays will have to wait until next time I guess. Too much to see...too little time...

The interaction when snorkeling is a blast!

One of the best dives I had during my trip down there.
