hey all
i am killing some time and taking some dan course to help improve my diver emergencies skills. what i am finding is that the books are very vague in how to treat injuries and other skills. maybe it might be that i am RN/EMT/Firefighter with 16 yrs trauma exp etc, but to the lay person do you think that these courses are worth.

i mean they do teach lay persons the basics but has anyone really used these courses?

what is everyones opinion?? i mean i signed up for 4 of them going for the DES so i am not against them, but just curious if people think they are worth their time??

I did my Dive Emergency Management Specialist classes in late May and was able to enjoy the bounty of DAN's DES Quest II (t-shirt and hat). My instructor is an ER nurse who covered not only the skills of O2 administration, EFR, and Hazardous Marine Life, but throughout everything she constantly focused on scene management and emergency management of the patient.

In my case, it really came in handy on our recent liveaboard when a diver had a dive accident on the first day of the second week. I was able to call upon what I had been taught and assess the scene quickly to find what was needed to do. Since the diver was being tended to by qualified folks, I helped move people away, organize a few folks to help and directed them what to do, clear the upper deck for Coast Guard Evacuation, secure the diver's computer and found folks with different computer types to see if we could download and print the data (we couldn't, the computer was too old), got water and towels for the patient, and generally just did whatever I could (without being directed) to expedite things for evacuation.

The crew was very thankful that they could recall divers and get the boat safely underway and not worry since everything to get ready for the evacuation was being taken care of.

I am very glad I did the courses and feel my confidence to deal with emergencies is far better than it was before, but ultimately only you could decide for yourself if its worth it or not.

Only one I've taken is the Oxygen Provider course and I think I learned a lot from that one.

I did my DEMP/DES class a few weeks ago. For the most part, it was a repeat of the dozen or so First Aid classes I've taken over the years.

This was the first time I'd ever been exposed to using an AED, though!

All in all, I'd say it was worth it. I needed the specific certs to DM for my local LDS.

sounds like it is pretty much worth the extra training and makes for a nice resume in the end as well
thanks for the replies
