We're planning a trip to Philippines next year. We're low key, non-party folks who prefer small resorts and small boats. I'd appreciate any leads on good ops/resorts situated on or nearby Apo.

Apo Island can be expensive for resorts, most divers stay nearby in Dumagete, (actually in Dauin south of Dumagete), and take the boat ride to Apo for a day. Hint try to buy your Apo Is. preserve pass in town not from the dive operator, (huge markup by dive operations) Apo Island Day Trip (http://www.dumagueteinfo.com/apo-island-day-trip.php)

Any leads on good resorts that are small but kinda nice? (ie good food, but no private plunge pools; fans instead of A/C). Also, if we drew it out to 10 days/2 weeks what would a good 2nd dive area/location be close to Dauin? Atlantis Dm is a little too commercial to our liking and really would prefer not to be exposed to the wild side of PG if there's something comparable without the seediness.

Also, while I'm at it...........just where is it in the Philippines that I should avoid for safety reasons since I'm not ex-Marine or special forces? I hear of "southern" areas that are questionable but not sure exactly where that might be????

Hey Cutter, you're going to love the philippines. And just for the record about PG, if you stay in Big Lalaguna, a 10 minute walk from Sabang (where the seedy part of PG is), you can avoid the "seediness"... But anyways...

The "troubled area" you are talking about is Mindanao, in the way south of the country. But from what I've hear, that is highly exagerated and if you are carefull (as you should be anywhere in the philippines), you'd be ok.

Anyways, if you are in Dumaguete/ Dauin, from what I know it would not be very difficult to make your way to either Moalboal, Malapascua or Bohol which are other prime diving destinations. Just a thought, since you'll be nearby...

Codman is right Sabang beach is the less-than-desirable portion of Puerto Galera area. Little LaLaguna beach is near Big LaLaguna beach, and just as quiet as Big LaLaguna, and you won't have to climb to get to it. Big LaLaguna does have the nicer beach if you want to sit out on it.
Dive Puerto Galera, Dive Philippines, Dive Action Divers (http://www.actiondivers.com/) is where my wife and I worked out of in 2005, they can arrange accomodations for you, (fan or aircon.)
If you are starting in Dumagete, you can get to Bohol, (Panglao Is diving), or Cebu, (Moalboal is a 2-21/2 hour drive west, Malapascua is a 2-3 hour drive north then a boat ride, Mactan Is 1/2 hour drive from the fast ferry) Ocean Jet (http://www.oceanjet.net/)
For Dumagete Rooms - El Dorado Beach Resort (http://www.eldoradoresort.org/rooms.asp)
You're in for a great dive experience!!

since you don't like crowds, and like the quiet life, don't forget sipalay! you can google it and see what comes up.

have tried easy diving in sipalay, and was satisfied with the service. the resort's a bit pricey though. sipalay is 2-3 hrs from dauin by land.

one more place you can try is sipaway island in san carlos city. about 3 hours from dauin as well (other direction). just google it and you'l get the link to whispering palms resort in sipaway island.

Hi cutter77,

Some personal experience for your reference.

We went diving at Dumaguete(Apo), Moalboal, Bohol(Anilao, Panglao island) & Malapascua on Feb.07. Peuto Galera & Anilao this July. All good.

Going Moalboal & Bohol is easy & fast from Dumageute. Malapascua is a little far and the traffic is tiring--fast ferry to Mectan, 3-5 hrs bus or taxi to Maya, then 40mins banca to the island. To go to PG or Anilao, you have to fly back to Manila from Dumaguete then dirve there . So one more non-diving day.

We dived with Sea Explorer 2007. They have a beautiful resort at Dumaguete/Daulin. I love the local style villa--cheap, clean, enough-spaced & romantic. Only fan but it is enough. The food is really good. And if you want more choice, hire a Tuk-tuk to Dumagueter city. Not far away.

We chose Sea explorer first because they have dive shops on each of those islands, and couple more I think. They helped us on almost everything, resorts, transfer, diving, etc. and more.

Their Dms & managers are very experienced and kind. I didn't expect Dumaguete is so good and only planned 3 days at Dumaguete. But they still successfully booked the pier and arranged the day trip to Apo for me.

Another bonus. they offer additional discount for multi-dives. And our dives with all of their branched were taken into account.

Staying in Dumaguete/Dauin is cheaper than staying on Apo itself, and is still a close boatride away. Stay here: Mikes Beach and Diveresort Dumaguete Dauin Philippines (http://mikes-beachresort.com/news/)
From Dumaguete you can easily take a ferry to Siquijor and dive there a few days, and then ferry over from Siquijor to Tagbiliran pier on Bohol, short drive to Panglao island to base yourself at Alona beach to dive around Panglao and Balicasag island with Scuba Diving Bohol Panglao, Scuba Diving Courses - Philippines (http://www.prosafaricenter.com)

That is more awesome diving than you can shake a stick at, and can easily kill two or three weeks.

I'm doing the same as you soon, heading to Dauin in a couple weeks. I've seen Bohol/Panglao, and will focus this trip on Apo/Siquijor.
