View Full Version : Tropical Hatchlings

Does anybody do any tropical fish hunting up here in the northeast? If you don't know, fish travel up in the Gulf Stream as eggs, hatch, and hang around until the water gets too cold. Some groups try to catch them before it's too late. I've done it for a few years now, mostly Ft. Wetherill in Rhode Island. Last year, I caught a spotfin butterflyfish and gave it to the New England Aquarium's group. This year, I've seen a lionfish in Provincetown (it was swimming with the comb jellies, and was so young it blended in with them) and some butterflyfish at Ft. Wetherill, where I also caught a southern puffer.

I haven't done any collecting, but I enjoy seeing them.
