Thor is a nickname from back in JHS, that just stuck. I have friends that don't even know my real name they have been calling me Thor for so long. I was a comic book junkie when I was a little kid. I actually have a friend nicknamed Loki. (Thor's evil brother)

You are correct on the chinacat part. The 46 comes from it being my favorite number for many reasons.

BSea
08-29-2007, 13:11
I came up with my name when I was joining another forum a few years ago. I was trying to come up with something that sounded aquatic. I remembered something that happened at my brother-in law's 50th b-day party. Somebody asked him what year he was born (I know it should have been easy to figure out). He said 49. Someone else said "AD or BC". We all laughed. Well, when I was joining this other forum I had just turned 50 a few days earlier. So BC became BSea.

my screen name comes from the year of my birth.
the chinese use animals for a twelve year cycle, they also use five elements for a five year cycle.

The Platypus swim, but not very well.
Kinda ugly.
Clumsy on land.
Lays an egg (might also refer to inability to tell a joke)
The etymology of "platypus" means "flat foot"; which is another name for a cop or private eye. Perhaps, John, you were cop/private eye at one time?

Am I close?

Mine came from the owner of the company I worked for when I first got out of the Navy.

When I first started using it as a screen name many moons ago every variation of the spelling was taken except "creggur" so that's what I went with...

So where does Foo come from?

Back in 1999 Momma Foo wanted a computer. She searched high and low for the cheapest one out there. Then she decided that the internet would be the way to go....so she searched high and low for the cheapest internet. She was given an automated login that had several numbers with "foo" in it. Momma Foo thought that was pretty funny. So to the internet world, she became lawgirlfoo. No....she isn't a lawyer...law is part of her name. Anyway, as she got involved in a few message boards, people began to shorten her name to Foo.....well the nickname stuck. When she started diving, she joined SB and naturally she was Foo. As I said before...I was dubbed Foo2 after my OW Cert....then we decided that my younger sis was Foo3....her daughter Foo3baby...my dad would be Fooman....and my hubby would be Fooman2...my children, the Foo2kids...and when my sister remarries, her hubby will be Fooman3. Yes....Fooman3 is still up for grabs....so if you want to follow the "foo" tradition...we can be bought...but the requirement is (aside from not being married yourself)you must love 22 month old, blue eyed, blonde hair girls, with the most beautiful smile you've ever seen. I know that all of this geneology can be con-foo-sing, so re-read slowly. :smiley36:

mine is a little silly. It was a frustrating day at work and I told my Boss, "Damn Skippy and walked off". Ten minutes later, he got on the intercom at work and announced "Skippy, come to my office." maggs_the

maggs_the

Maggie was my german shepard that my ex-husband HAD to have to scare anybody who might come by. She was 16 weeks old when we got her and we didnt know she was the runt. She topped out at 45 pounds soaking wet and was as sweet to everyone as any animal ever could be... a total disappointment to my ex-husband as a dog of any worth but he did still care for her in his own way, but when he would scream at me, she would sit on my feet ... silently.. just sit there between us.. and I knew my timid little Maggie had made a choice and so did my ex-husband. He would beg her to come to him but she would just sit on my feet until he went away and calmed down.

When I "grew a pair" and managed to get out of the marriage, my screen name was Maggie.. then maggs.. and "the_maggs" was taken so rather than lose my baby girl's namesake, I took the reverse of her.

(yikes... that was a little more soul bareing that i would have thought i intended)

I love you Maggie girl.... hope you're playing hard over the rainbow

Puffer Fish
11-03-2007, 19:37
Mine is from a night dive in the Pacific off Panama... we came across a school of giant puffer fish.. 3 ft long or so... sleeping... I decided to play with one (I know, bad thing to do, but this was a very long time ago).. when I got him awake, he "puffed" .. I was so amazed at the size, that I dragged the poor thing back to the boat and tried to pick it up out of the water... yea.. really smart move....was the source of endless jokes for year after that...so I have used it ever since... reminds me to never think I have all the answers..

I'll let you guys speculate for a while. Should be interesting.

Well, it's been a while (and also interesting) since anyone's posted a guess, so I might as well tell you; I am the PlatypusMan because the name's a constant reminder that I want to dive in Australia in the future--both the GBR and across the country around Perth in Western Australia.

Kunk35
11-04-2007, 06:36
Well, I USED to be Lumberdude, or several variations there of, cuz I ran a lumber yard for a while. Thought it would be what I would do forever. Then I got a different job in a similiar profession, but we don't carry lumber, so that one just doesn't work anymore. So I thought and thought, then just got tired of trying to come up with something, and decided to come up with a name that didn't tie itself to my work. (Just in case I change again. You know, they say that people change careers like 5 times over the course of their lives...)

So Kunk35 was born from my last name, and the fact that I was 35 when I took the interest in scuba and joined the SB forum.

Navy OnStar
11-06-2007, 11:55
I'm a Navy flight instructor and was flying a student on his 4th flight in the helicopter. My wife called the squadron and asked them to call me on the radio and have me call home. I got the call and landed at the Outlying practice field I was at and went into the crew shack to call. My wife told me she locked her keys in the car and our daughter needed to get to school. Since she didn't have time to wait for AAA I told her I would be there in 10 minutes. (it's a 20 minute drive from base and I was a 10 minute flight from base and my car) About ten minutes later I arrived OVER my house and gave my keys to the student and had him hit the unlock button on the Key Fob. The lights flashed as my wife ran out and opened the door. (My 4yr. old Daughter also ran out into the front yard.....Naked and waving)(O.K. stop thinking about it you sickos!) So I flew back to the field to finish the students flight and one of the other instructors asked how I got back so soon. I told the story and within seconds my callsign changed to OnStar!

So if you live in Pensacola drop by my house and give me your keys.:smiley36: Maybe someday I can help you too!

I'm a fan of ancient Roman history and culture. Vercingetorix was a Gallic Arveni war chief who defeated Caesar twice. He was finally defeated during the siege of Alesia in 52 BC. I use this username on other forums.

I like your name. I'm also a fan of Roman History. BTW, I was walking around Clermon-Ferrand France one night about 10-15 years ago after drinking a little too much wine when I bumped into a statue. It was Vercingetorix.

My screen name: I married into a Greek family, my name is Joe and I like the bubble gum and the musical instrument so BouzoukiJoe seemed like a fit. Another handle I sometimes use elsewhere is joeforbroke.

mitsuguy
11-07-2007, 13:40
back in the day... like 95-96, I had a 3000gt... my original name was m3kgtguy m = mitsubishi, 3k = 3000 gt guy... anyways, I evolved into other mitsubishi's tuning, building, etc. and m3kgtguy, although ok on the "mailing list" as there was no web forums at the time, worked, it didn't quite roll off the tongue in person...

when I started meeting more people in person, I decided it was time for a change... it evolved into mitsuguy...

Mine is very self explanatory...quite plain from the normal Unruly Julie name that a fellow co-worker coined.

Isaac Asimov's "Foundation"

DollFin

DollFin is the name I've used on margaritaville.com for years. I wanted a screen name that A. identified me as female, B. tied in to the whole Parrothead theme, and since I also love dolphins, it just popped into my head. When I started diving this fall, I figured the name was just as appropos for the diving community and helps keep me from having an identity crisis! :)

I ski. In between the trees. Sometimes both skis end up on different sides of the tree . . . .

I also like the conservationist implication, but its more for the skiing.

Mycroft
12-26-2007, 14:48
mines easy......Im a chef....and I dive.....kind of cliche, no?

Every time I see this it reminds me of one of my dive buddies. His handle is "DivingChief"

He is of course a diver, and retired chief of police in his town (when I met him he wasn't retired.)

Can you identify the two places the name appears in literature? If you can then the story of how I came to use it might make sense.

Nobody yet? Nobody around here reads?

I really don't read, but I can search. :)

Mycroft Holmes is a fictional character (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fictional_character) in the stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Conan_Doyle). He is the older brother (by seven years) of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes).

In Robert A. Heinlein (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_A._Heinlein)'s novel The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Moon_Is_a_Harsh_Mistress) (1966 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1966)), the character Mycroft Holmes is a self-aware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-aware) computer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer) system entrusted with running the life-support systems, communications, payroll and many other things, in a penal colony (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penal_colony) underground in the Scuba Gear and Scuba Diving Equipment - Discount dive gear (http://Moon) or "Luna". Mycroft eventually sides with characters inciting a revolution to free Luna, and is instrumental in their victory against the Lunar Authority on Earth. The name 'Mycroft Holmes' is given to the computer by one of the characters, from the HOLMES acronym of his official name High-Optional, Logical, Multi-Evaluating Supervisor, Mark IV, Mod. L

So is this correct?

Cheating eh? Well yup, and the story of my handle is thus:

Years ago, on another forum there was a bit of a fued going on. This involved shark diving in FL. This one guy was trying to diagnose a photograph, and signed on as "Sherlock". I know who it was, the guy is an ass, and borderline criminal, but in order to rebut his stuff, I changed my handle to Mycroft. Since Mycroft is not only Sherlock's older brother, but is also classified as "smarter" than Sherlock by Arthur Conan Doyle. Upon further research, the physical description of Mycroft would fit me fairly well, so I kept it.

Oh, and my day job? I am a DataBase Administrator and Data Architect, so the other entry fits pretty well as well.

Just kidding. Though I have been known to skinny-dip on a caribbean beach or two. I just changed my name based on chosen icon. That's all. Not as deep as my dives, but there it is.
