View Full Version : A challenge for me

So I just got a call from my older brother and he informed me that his kidney's have decided to shutdown sooner than he expected. Some background, 3 of my 4 brothers have polycystic kidney disease, the most common kidney disease. My younger and oldest brothers have both had kidney transplants successfully. The two brothers that had transplants do not have my blood type, the brother that needs one now does.

Here is my situation, I am 6'5" and as of August 2009 I weighed approx 380lbs (BMI 45.1), as of today I weight 328lbs(BMI 38.9), so far so good. The surgery is expected to occur in late January 2010 and I must have a BMI of 35 or less which is 295. So my goal for 10 weeks is 38lbs.

I have been doing low carb without alot of exercise due to a blown knee (I got that trying to exercise on a bike and took a header).

I start back in the pool tomorrow, hopefully won't hurt the knee to much.

Man Phil.....That sux...I know you can drop the weight given that you have such an important goal...Can you get into a pool and do workouts??? (Very low stress on all Important joints you are keeping). Good luck to you and your brother...

Good Luck to you and your brother...and way to go on the weight loss so far! It is definitely hard work, but in the long run so very worth it!

You have a very notable goal in mind so it should be easier to stick to. I agree with Cheddarchick on the pool workouts if have access to one. You can get a very good work out in a shorter amount of time that's easy on the body. Best of luck to you!

Started in the pool today, 600yds (tried breast stroke but the kick hurt the knee).

Did some machine work for the upperbody.

Down to 317, been getting to the pool twice a week for 2400yds. Tough doing more since I just changed jobs and have trouble getting out on time.

Was looking at this thread & wondered if you made it to your goal? Did you have the surgery? Please update!

Ok there has been a problem with my brother's kidney...strangely enough it has not failed as fast as expected. His kidney is operating slightly better than permissible for a transplant, so my brothers and I are on a holding pattern.

Strange hoping for that final amount of failure so he can get on with his life.

As for me I am hovering around my goal, just went diving for the first time since dropping the weight. First dive I took 6 lbs off it wasn't enough, 2nd dive dropped 2 more, and I thingk I can do 2 more... next dive friday going to try for a total lost of 10 pounds, down from 24 to 14.

Wow cgvmer! I feel strange saying that I hope your brother's kidney fails... I pray that he returns to good health very soon.

It's good to hear you are losing the weight. A great benefit for doing what you are doing for your brother. I'm trying to lose some weight now too. I'm 6'-0" and 265. I'm trying to get down to about 210.

Still sending happy thoughts to your family.
