Looking back on some pics from a night dive in Cozumel spring of 08 when I came across this pic. Brought back some painful memories. As I recall I took a couple pics, inhaled to float up, and let the current carry me as I continued the dive. A bit later into the dive it felt as if my hands were on fire and the only thing I can think is that my hands may have brushed the tendrils as I floated over. Sorry, the pic is not so good, hopefully someone can make out the subject.

Thanks

Yup definitely an anemone. Not sure of the exact species though.

I'll second awap's berried anemone.

Awap is correct. The berried anemone (Alicia Mirabilis) can be fairly irritating to the bare skin. He prefers to open at night, spending most of the day as a blob. The are not so common -- very nice specimen.

Sorry, Navy. You posted as I was typing. I hate being redundant.

Thanks guys. Good to be able to put a name to it. Will definitely be keeping my distance from the next one when I see it. At the time I wasn't sure what had got me as I never felt that I'd came in contact with anything.
