View Full Version : 3rd Annual DDCN Dive. Beaver Lake, April 17 & 18.

Dark Wolf

It appears that we will be having the 3rd annual DDCN dive at Beaver Lake on the weekend of April 17, 18. Depending on the number of divers who plan to attend, I think that it would be easier to have the dives at the "Bluffs".

I was also thinking of a "Pot Luck" type lunch on Saturday, and possibly going out as a group for supper on Saturday night.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Who does aquasports use for boat dives down there? I went on the boat dive last year on a big pontoon which was nice to have to go to different sites. I think if it is cheap enough do a boat dive lets do it because it would be alot more interesting.

c and j has a nice dive boat from what i hear

Sounds great. I can't forecast that far away but I'll just go ahead and say Saturday or Sunday would both work for me. C&Js does have a boat that cost $200 for full day and $125 for half day plus all the fuel. If we had a decent turnout that wouldn't cost much per diver.

Dark Wolf
01-26-2010, 08:30
Camping is possible, and yes the boat charge would not be bad depending on how many people we get lined up. I may have to call C & J.

I'd be up for going the boat route... To be able to hit more good sites I think that would be a great idea...

Count me in, but we may need a bigger boat if as many people show up this year as did last year in the freezing weather & snow.

Vlane
01-26-2010, 10:51
C&J's site says the boat seats 8 so we could just hit the closest site for about an hour per group and rotate it. Might be easiest to meet at the bluffs and have one group head out then while the rest of the group dives the bluffs. We can focus on that more when the date gets closer and go from there.

I just would like 2 dive. Boat or no boat.

Dark Wolf
01-26-2010, 15:04
I agree about the group size, that was my only hesitation about the boat. But the rotating people is a good idea, I think we can make that work.

Hey man!! Yep, still alive!! I know what you mean. Had to sell some of mine to cover bills, but it will be replaced next month. I am just glad that the Dr. likes how my lungs are sounding! Been on 1 dive since July 4. That is just WRONG!!!

Hope that you can make it out!

Been spending lots of time down there over the last two years. Some things you may want to consider.

1.) Lost Bridge Marina has the "big barge" pontoon. Probably rents for about 250 a day. Seen about 20 divers pile onto it fairly comfortably.

2.) Lost Bridge does have a dive shop, but I've only used them for a quick airfill. For any other dive needs would happily recommend C&Js up the hill from the dam.

3.) When I camp, I camp at Indian Creek, has shore diving. Not sure if that campground would be open in April though.

4.) The campground below the dam should be open, but its on the river. Shore diving there could be "interesting".

5.) Another plug for C&J's. They can arrange anything that might be needed for your group.

6.) The bluffs would appeal to everyone, as you can stay shallow or go beyond '130.

I would be happy to answer any questions or tag along in April. That weekend was usually when DUI came to town and the start of my dive season.

The other point with meeting at the bluffs is that while there is limited room down by the water for people to hang out, there are the parking areas just a little ways up the hill with room for more. There is also limited parking down by the water so depending on how many people (cars) show up, it's almost certain that some people with have to park up the hill. Is the water deep enough at that point for the pontoons to pull up or would they have to be loaded elsewhere? One last point is to remember to bring some cash to pay the fee as you drive in to the bluffs area.

Now that bob sold the marina, I'm not sure the status of that big barge. It's a 40 foot barge, 15 feet wide, dive ladders equipped. The new owners of the marina are pretty cool though, should be a lot easier to work with them than bob if they still have the bigass pontoon.

Lost bridge also has a great air fill station.

some other random thoughts...

The best divespots on the lake - helicopters, airplanes, etc. below c&js, the foundations, a few awesome wall dives - are all only accessable by boat... so we should definitly look into finding one. If we can't, the bluffs offer a few good things to dive now. someone mentioned a houseboat sunk off the bluffs recently too?

c&j's has cabins now, I toured them a year or two back and they're usuable. two beds and a bathroom, but what else do you need? they also have a bunkhouse which holds six or something. it's all reasonably priced, but I'm not sure how fast they fill up and what the availability of them are. c&j's is also a full fledged diveshop, has nitrox (i think), etc.

Do you think 4 hours or 8 hours? And that is the pontoon I was on and had great entry exit's.
We were on for maybe 4 hours and hit all 3 spots with all of the people we had. But if we did have a full boat then 8 hours would be necessary.
http://www.lostbridgemarina.com/Rental%20Images/42footer.jpg

I would put $100 down and cover fuel if everyone wants to cover the rest. Which would be only $13 if 15 show and $10 a person if we had 20 show.

(Deep Voice) I'm In! But I really think the cost should be split up evenly. Or set up a PayPal account and have everybody that plans on going/attending send $20-$25 to the account. Ask somebody to oversee the funds and rental of the boat. Just a thought. I'm IN either way.

Im sure there is a deposit on it so that is why I was willing to throw that down to get it reserved. I will call monday to get details. Also once everyone shows they can just pay their part on arrival. But if someone has a paypal account then we can use that way. Doesnt bother me either way.

Dark Wolf
01-31-2010, 17:25
I will create a poll and find out how many are interested in diving from the boat, how many are interested in shore diving. Then perhaps we can get a decent count and determine how things will be split up.

The cost for 8 hours is $295 plus gas and tax. Gas usually runs around $15-30 obviously depending on how much driving you do. You pay for the rental upfront to reserve it. There is a damage deposit due at the time of rental that will be refunded with the undamaged boat. If you burn 10 gallons of gas (which is a lot for the little 4 cylinder engine) your grand total would be $350.95 after tax. The damage deposit is $250
Also we are going to need to decide who wants to drive this Semi :smiley36:

I can cover the deposit or do whatever is needed.

I can drive it. I drive my LDS's 45' pontoon out of lost bridge marina to these same dive spots so i'm used to it. I roughly know where all the dive locations are too. (I say roughly because I usually have to cruise a cove or two before finding copter cove).

417Diver

So the deposit & fuel I will cover for certain.

If I will not be allowed to put a $100 down then it will be $20 per diver if 15 are diving on the boat. So far I only see 9 votes for boat/shore diving.
If that is to much for everyone to put down then I will just put the $100 down and it will only be $13 per diver for 15.

So if $20 is going to put you off the boat say so we can get things figured out.

Dark Wolf
02-04-2010, 07:07
$20 is more than fair, and I will kick in a little extra to offset your initial expense. Thanks again for getting the boat lined out! Much appreciated.

Game fish. Here is the definition from the 2010 regulations.

Rough Fish – Gar (except alligator gar), bowfin,
common carp, Asian carp (grass carp, bighead
carp, silver carp), sucker (including buffalo),
bullhead and drum.

Heck yeah!!! I need more dive buddies in case my brother-in-law gets a girlfriend or something worse. 417diver has been a pretty reliable dive buddy, but if he keeps having kids his wife might not let him out as often:smiley36:
The more divers we get the better chance I have of looking like I know what I am doing!!!!

She has been fixed now :smiley36:

Once again the Army interferes. I have to go to some post-deployment crap out in Cali. I plan on taking my gear and getting a couple dives in out there.

Anyone know any good dive spots (or shops) in Orange County?

Sorry guys. I have been very busy and have not been on in a while. Let me catch up on things on here, and we will come up with a rough idea of what the schedule will be. I will still be there, but will not be diving due to some unforseen issues that have come up. More to follow.........

Here's what I know (I think) myself & two others with me will be staying at CandJ. We are heading down early Friday morning & plan to dive Friday, Sat, & maybe Sunday. Plot & neo are staying at CandJ, others are staying nearby at Pointe Royal I think it's called. We have the 42 ft poontoon from lost bridge marina rented for Saturday & can pick it up anytime between 9:00am & 10:00am. We plan to have people hang out & dive by the bluffs while we shuttle people back & forth from the boat diving sites to the shore diving sites & stash extra tanks in vehicles by the bluffs so we don't overload the boat. As far as food wise, not sure if weare stillplanning to do a boil or what? It is about time to get the details figured out.

I don't think I'll be in Houston the week before this dive, so I can't pick up crawfish down there, but I will check the local fish market. I'll call in the morning.

More of snack wagon with SOS and eggs for breakfast and hot dog and hamburgers for lunch. A good place to eat is the Fly Rod Inn, good food, good beer and nice atmosphere and just a couple of miles down the road from C&J's

We are picking up the boat Saturday morning at Lost Bridge Marina between 9:00am-10:00am. We are planning to shuttle people back & forth from the bluffs to the boat dive sites. Not sure how many are still planning to dive from the boat & if we will need to pick people up from the bluffs before we dive or after we do a couple of dives.
I guess we need to do a new poll to see how many are boat diving & how many are meeting at the marina?

bob, the old marina owner, used to make everyone sign waivers and had max limits on how many people/tanks were allowed on his boats (they do have weight limits)

have you checked into any of that 417diver? that will probably dictate our plans for getting onto the boat.

Makes no difference to me where we meet the boat on Sat BUT it would be a lot easier to load from the dock/ramp by the dam/campground.

Loading tanks/gear off the bluffs shoreline (especially if there is any wind) can be a PIA. Holding the pontoon on the boulders could end up forfeiting a damage deposit.

Just my 2 cents worth

The dock for sure would be the best. But there is a ramp at the bluffs. You might have to walk in the water a little bit to load. Oh wait, you might get wet. That won't work. :smiley2:

I'm planning on attending and most likely meeting at the Lost Bridge marina. My only concern is going to be the logistics of boat diving. I'm not sure how many sites we are planning to hit but I'm thinking we may hit a few problems since there will be a mix of single and doubles divers. The doubles are going to have longer bottom times and possibly need longer SI which could create some logistical problems with going from site to site and the SI of other divers.

417Diver
04-01-2010, 10:30
Just do max dive times for the boat dives. Those diving doubles can dive the bluffs for a long time then do the SI and then catch the next boat...

There is only so much fun you can have at one site.

guys - i was on the north end of the lake last night. the water is a brisk 47 degrees, but it looks like the lake has retained some of the good viz from last year. at least, from what i could tell from the surface...

i'm happy to taxi any folks from LBM to the bluffs. is it cool if i tie my boat up to the rental barge?

its really up to the people we rent the boat from whether or not we can go around the lake picking people up or if we have to meet at the marina... someone needs to check into it.

Ok, I called the marina & there is no problem with us picking up & dropping of people wherever we like as long as we do not have more than 24 people on board at any one time.
The person renting the boat & anyone who will be driving the boat must sign the paperwork before we take the boat out.
I wonder if we will even have a total of 24 people to take on the boat, seems a lot have dropped out? As far as plans I will be there Friday morning and plan to dive that afternoon. We are planing to go out Friday night with anyone interested to eat in Rogers.
Get up and be at the marina by 9:00am (unless everyone would like to leave on the boat by 9:00am Then we can meet earlier) if weare there by 9:00am we should be able to leave the marina by 10:00am. Some can park their cars at the bluff swith food for lunch & we can break after a few dives for lunch & back out again. have the boat back by 6:00pm and everyone cadowhat they like for dinner that night weather some of us go out again or not? So who wants to grill for lunch & who wants to do a boil?? I am open to thoughts & suggestions.

Vlane
04-03-2010, 20:21
I think Neo is right about a new thread, but lets keep it simple. Put whether we want to meet or leave at 9 and how many people we will have with us to take on the boat. If we want to do a potluck style lunch it should also include what we plan to bring.
