My name is Taffey, so naturally I have a interest in odd and unique names. Do any of you have a unique name or have kids or family members with unique names?

As a teacher, I see unique names quite often...sometimes sadly so. Probably my favorite example of "What the hell was your mother thinking?" was a girl named LaTrina.

Nothing like naming your child after a toilet.

I have a college kid working for me whose name is Qwanchaize, I imagine him as a little kid sitting in kindergarten struggling to spell his name. What were his parents thinking??

As a teacher I have heard some real pips, but this one is my topper...

I was with a friend of mine in Brooklyn and a lady yelled out to her daughter down on the sidewalk. The poor girl's name was "Starqueesha."

This one was witnessed by my aunt...

She was walking through a Macys when a very pregnant woman walked up to the perfume counter and pointed to a name. She asked the clerk, "How do you say that?" The clerk replied "Oscar De Laurente." The woman responded, "Good, that's what I'm gonna name my baby."

Wow.

I'm Welsh and I get called Taffy from time to time. My real name is Nicola which is extremely common at home but less so in the US. It is frequently pronounced wrongly or I get called Nicole instead.
There are some great Welsh names out there though; Guto, Meinir, Eira, Heulwyn and my personal favourite, Gwawr!

New Zealand couple and it's a true story (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070808/od_uk_nm/oukoe_uk_newzealand_name). Now they are trying to name their son Superman. How much do they hate this child?

This is a true story of what happened to my co work the other day...her daughter started preschool and the teacher got on to her for not spelling her name correctly. The little girl's name is Alivia not Olivia. The girl tried to tell the teacher that and she reprimanded her for correcting her, so my co-worker was called to the school and told that in order for her child to attend class there they would have to change the spelling of her name, because it was causing problems in the classroom. My co worker took her daughter straight out of the school.

I don't think the law can get involved, because it is a privately ran and funded school.

I have always said there should be rules for naming children or at least a handbook...I keep telling my parents the only things named Taffey are candy, cats and dogs, and ME!!!!!

On a serious note, parents really should think about their children's names and the spelling used...no one takes a 40 year old woman or man seriously with a name like mine.

I plan on giving my kid themiddle name "Dr." Hopefully, he can get a job without having to go to med school....:)

On a more serious note, my dad is Gorden Lane Gibby, my mom is Nancy Elaine Gibby. I've always thought it funny how close their middle names are. My dad, with the name of "Gordon" swore he'd give his kids "normal" names, so I'm Michael Paul Gibby--MPG.......go figure. And I usually go by the last name, except every once in a while someone thinks it's "Giddy." What's even worse is people I've known for a while, like, two years, who one day suddenly ask me "Hey Gibby, what's your last name?" Then I have to explain that Gibby is my last name..... And I've only met one other person who used "Gibby" as a name, on a message forum. I asked if it was his name, and he told me it was his "spiritual name." ? Ok, fine by me!

I have a friend whose mother is Kristy. Their last name is Christie. His mother is Kristy Christie. Pronounced the same way.

And I absolutely refuse to marry anyone named "Libby." Never ever ever!!
