A recent operator that DID NOT garner any respect form me told us:
don't pee in your wetsuits because it kills the coral.

I'm thinking that he meant:
don't pee in MY wetsuits because they are rentals.

Questions, comments, observations?

Sounds that way to me also.......

I am sure anything not natural to the environment doesn't help the coral, but it is a large ocean, so it is so diluted by the time it gets to the coral... so I am going to have to say "don't pee in my wetsuits"!

Where do fish pee? Maybe fish pee doesn't hurt coral.

:-) Fish don't pee - they couldn't or else there is a chance that water I swallowed was fish pee! :-) or worse fish poo!

Just think about what you DID swallow.....

this dive operator is obviously mistaken in that people who would belive such a story would care about coral.

ROFLOL...that's too funny!! Why not just be honest and ask people to try not to pee in the rental suits? Like that's a big deal.

Then again there's a dive operator (Scuba Shack) on Maui that prohibits peeing in ANY wetsuit, including your own.

oh I'm sure there are hippies out there rigging plastic bottles around their associative pee parts just in case this operator was right.

people make me laugh

He probably wanted to scare people not to wizz in his suits. Just saying "please don't because that's gross for me" probably won't deter people as much as "YOU'LL KILL THE ENTIRE OCEAN AHHHHHHHHH!!!"

I only pee in rental wetsuits!! In fact every time I put one on I just magically have to go!

I have heard the the residuals of certain meds that is in urine could have an adverse effect on the coral. But a lot of people would have to taking certain meds and group peeing on the coral. May be why I have heard some waste treatment plants prefer people do not flush medicines. The chemicals used in treatment may not neutralize chemicals in meds before treated water is released back into rivers and oceans. Just my two cents.

Wouldn't you have to be pretty much right on top of the coral for your urine to effect it, if you were taking medicines? I'm no doctor so I won't say for sure, but that would make the most sense to me (is this is true)

Probably a polite way of saying don't pee in my wetsuit. I think that a few mm of urine will rapidly dissolve in an ocean, unless everybody pee at the same time directly on the same coral..., but than again...

sounds like ocean legend, the important thing to remember is not to pee upstream of buddy.

every fish and sea creature has to "go" in the ocean sor us humans is no different, i think he didn;t want to clean that smelly wetsuit after you just went in it.

Well, this was in Okinawa (Ishigaki Is.), Japan (land of Bukakke) with a Japanese operator so you never know what THEY'RE thinking...

I always figured that human urine is ABOUT equivelant to sea water anyhow (give or take a few chemicals) so never worried about it...
not that I EVER pee in my wetsuit (:smiley36:). Then again you never know (although I often strongly suspect...)

....sounds kinda like the dive boat Capt who tells the seasick folks to hurry up and jump in the water, cuz they'll feel better.

Translation? "Don't puke on my boat!"
