View Full Version : Shark dive in Melbourne Aquarium this weekend!

Doing a shark dive this weekend, it does feel a little weird going for a dive in an aquarium when I have my OW cert. However I think it will be a great way to see some sharks up close, even if they are somewhat "tame".

Anyway, this is the company it is through;

Nice, case. Heard good reports about the Melbourne Aquarium dive.
I kind of enjoy those sort of dives. Partly because it's diving in fish soup, partly because of the tourists gawping at you through the glass. It's fun removing the reg & pulling faces at them. :-)

Well the dive was fun, max depth of 7 metres. There are some seriously massive rays in there. I didn't really see the sharks as close as I had hoped. One of the dissapointing but understandable things on this dive is you are not allowed to free swim, you have to be over weighted and stay on the bottom at all times and you are not allowed to touch anything. Still it's something different, glad I did it.

I did a shark dive at the Tampa Aquarium in 2003 I believe it was.
The Florida Aquarium - Tampa Bay (http://www.flaquarium.org/cm/templates/exhibits.aspx?articleid=55&zoneid=31)

I was a new diver and it was pretty cool. Especially watching the video that my friend took as I was descending into the shark cage right after the announcer said that the cage was there to protect the divers and then a shark swam through it.

We pretty much had to stay stationary, but could look for shark teeth in the substrate.

I got some godd pictures, but once I did some diving in Hawaii (both Maui and Kauai) and saw sharks on every dive, I would not dive with them in an aquarium again.
