I'm about to buy a JBL D8 via Amazon.com. This is my first gun and I heard JBL is a good starter gun.

My question is, will the gun come with the string, or do I have to buy the string separately? The Amazon page doesn't say whether string is included, and doesn't offer the string for purchase, so I am wondering. Thank you.

Be careful about buying a gun off the Internet unless you are very familiar with it. You may end up purchasing the correct gun for your needs less than a year later on your second purchase. Most new JBL spearguns come with shooting line. Call Dolphin and ask them. The dive shop can set it up for you properly. Dolphin SCUBA is in Sacramento. Stop by on your next trip from the Airport or from skiing and check the gun out before blindly buying something. What they have in store might not be the same as on their site.

Their Amazon price is lower.

A 75 cm railgun may be a better choice for our area.

Just make sure you have a separate float to stringer the catch to and you shouldn't have a problem with them getting you. Also, if you are comfortable with it, dive in kelp forests to spearfish. Sharks hate kelp so it will help to keep incidents to a minimum.

Solid advice.

Always read up on speargun reviews (http://www.world-dive.com) and any kind of reviews for that matter.

i won't buy jbl, but that's just me. i've held them in my hand and they feel like toys (crap). that said, it looks like it would be fine for reef fish. may not hold up to anything bigger. think of it as a leveled-up pole spear. expect it to fall apart and don't get pissed when it does.

most guns come with line. it may be crap, but it will come with it. think about upgrading as it is cheap and worth it.

you will defenitely buy another gun a year from now, if you stick with it. count on it.
