View Full Version : Does Athens Scuba Park Ever Have Good Vis?

I have only been to Athens once but the vis was only ~5ft. I have heard (from a Frisco scuba shop) that vis is typically 25-30 feet but I am sceptical. Any regular divers care to elaborate?

Since CSSP has opened up and become a popular <?:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="&#111;n"><st1:place w:st="&#111;n">Dallas</st1:place></st1:City> favorite for training. ASP visibility has skyrocketed due to lower student counts. I have seen conditions in the 30-50 foot range quite a bit. not after a rain storm or on a Sunday afternoon but early Saturdays and in to the afternoon. I have on occasion seen it in the 100' range. But I haven't been there this year (yet). <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Thanks,
Woody

Yesterday was 5' max, and really more like 2 - 3'.

Been there in October and measured it at 80 feet.

I've wanted to go there for a while now, but I keep hearing mixed stories about the place. Is it much better than CSSP?

I enjoy it. No fish life unfortunately although I did see a turtle once. Several wrecks. I like teaching there because of the numerous docks and submerged platforms. It can silt up quickly so good buoyancy control is a must! About 30 feet max depth. I am scheduling another freediving clinic there in Sept for anyone interested.

Now don't beat around the bush. We're here to share our opinions. Feel free to let us know what you really think! :smiley36:

We don't do classes there as Naui mandates that we do a dive to 40 feet, and at athens, it takes a bit too long to do that, and the students are pissed off that we make them buy mask, snorkel, fins, and shovels.

Doesn't this describe MOST Texas lakes? :smiley36:

Thanks for the info guys! Perhaps I will just stick with CSSP since it's much closer to OKC

In July, water was sufficiently warm that no wetsuit was needed. Beautiful turquoise blue color. Viz was about 4 feet.

My wife and I have dove there several times... never great vis, but there are times that are better than the others.
It is a lake dive, take it for what it is and enjoy the day of diving.

I've been there once....... That was enough for me. Just didn't blow my hair back like I thought it would..

So as you see from these posts, both the vis and people's opinions of ASP vary greatly. :smiley1:

It's worth trying for a day if you have been going to the same place frequently and want a change of scene. Then you can formulate your own opinion and take it from there.

I would like to add that since my OW dives at Athens, in poor vis, that I have returned twice over the last two weeks and the vis was 40-50ft. I had some great dives out there and there are plenty of wrecks to entertain.
