Hi everyone . o 0 O
I'm Vampire Squid and I've just found this Forum. I'm a regular at SDNZ and SODS (both NZ) but I hold the record for amount of times being banned from DiveOz (so some of my fellow Aww-zzz's, know who I am then ) in my home country, let alone city.
I dive regularly along the Illawarra and Eden-Monaro (Sapphire) Coasts which make up the southern New South Wales coastline. Heaps of dives, with groups, buddies and just solo. I'm Adv-Nitrox and looking to get DM's up this year.
I occassionally sojourn across the Tasman to New Zealand (will be there this June) which I think is just great when it comes to Diving.
My regret is that I never became a Commercial Diver.
I do hope I get to own a Submersible one day though and watch a Blue Whale give me a close swim-by ...outta the blue.
I'm quietly working upon a new and radical Fin design too.

...I've just realised that I've just logged into a very popular 'Namerican' Forum. So I would just like to push aside any anti-Namerican sentiments I might have reserved for whatever reason and say "hello" to all the 'fellow' Divers in that part of the world.

For obvious reasons, I like your avatar.

Welcome.

In fact, a particular subpopulation of North Americans is heavily represented on this board. We call them, "Texans." Keys to success on this board have therefore led to the formulation of an intricate belief system. Critical elements of that belief system are as follows:

1. George Bush is great.

2. Barack Obama wants to socialize Scubatoys.

3. School buses should have gun racks in the back windows.

4. Satan runs Scubaboard.

5. George Bush is really great.

6. Global warming doesn't exist. But if it does, it is caused by socialism.

7. George Bush was the best US president since Margaret Thatcher.

8. Jesus Christ supports the round-up and return of illegal aliens to Area 51.

9. Barack Obama is MOF.

10. Same sex marriage is generally bad but should be allowed in Tennessee, so that brothers can marry.

Welcome to the forum WGT summed it up nicely :smilie39:

I'll say he (wgt) did.
But I thought it would be more like this...

China to invade into East Russia (Siberia) for rich Resources after the total collapse of the global economy in reaction to the 'Great Inflation' that reigned for a decade (you could hear Mugabe laugh from Zimbabwe).
Russia and China at War. Former Soviet satellite states take advantage of a preoccupied and weakened Russia to push for their own empowerment against their former ruler. Hindered by the former Soviet Satellite States, (Karelia breaks free also and with St Petersburg as its capital - joins the Scandinavian group), Russia looses Siberia and faces all out invasion by China.
Russia calls upon America for "help".
USA is hesitant to commit until Crazy Kim in North Korea, allied to the Chinese, gets trigger happy and attempts to nuke Alaska.
(By this time - the Adelaidian manufactured laser technology of the Polaris defense system nullifies 89% of any effective Nuclear attack ...Adelaide being in South Australia)
A few wayward nukes hit vacant Alaskan territory (resulting in mass environmental disasters) - but its enough to bring the USA into alliance with a hard-pressed Russia. USA loves its National Parks.
China tells North Korea "You idddddiioooot!" Crazy Kim is assasinated.
While the USA is busy with the Russians against the Chinese, etc. Most of the Islamic nations rally together to do to the French, what the Germans did to the Jews (shame those Nuclear Tests in French Polynesia by Mitterand, never amount to much in the end) - give or take something akin to a mass riot across all of Europe that lasts a good many years.
Eventually the Jew and the Moslem kiss and make up with the proverbial saying "Now lets get those Italians!".
The Italians kick the Vatican out of existence and start promoting Cooking Shows instead to save their skins.
In the end, the Chinese and its allies settle for Siberia which is returned to a more Asian cultural tie, rather than a European one through Russia. A few southern Asian nations take a bit of southern China in response and Tibet really does get its ass-kicked for trying to seek independence as a 'Religious' state. Nepal grabs whats left and starts building giant tunnels through the mountains.

Proudly brought to you by Down Under - but a Day Ahead.
...I forgot to add that I'm part Feral (something akin to the American Hippy, but just not as 'peaceful and loving').

I dove with a "bloke" (he taught me this term) from Perth last year up on the GBR. He showed me that the folks down under can have quite a sense of humor. Especially when we'd be at the bar (gotta love a liveaboard boat that has a bar) and he would say, "This yank here is going to buy me a round, hell since he's a damn yank he really should buy us all a round...". I came home with many new friends, a great appreciation for Australia and it's people, and very little money left after buying all those rounds of "VB", which I was advised was not the best the country has to offer but would do in a pinch as long as I was buying and it was all they had on the boat.

And now I'm trying to find a way to go back and visit again, but this time I'll do two things; plan to stay a little longer, and bring more beer money :smiley36:.

I'm sorry, but that is just wrong!!!!

"Yuk!" VB (Victorian Bitter ...also known as Vietnamese Bull****) is purely a cheap and nasty beer commonly used by Alcoholics...its a step up from the Wino's draining those Alco-Wipe containers. New Zealand has the most awards for Worlds Best Beer and I agree.
Shame about your Gay situation over there - why don't you start promoting Celibacy and all its advantages just to piss those who jump on the horse and fall off the other side ...off!?
If Gays can have a special day (Mardi-Gras) - why then, in the name of EQUALITY, can't Rednecks have a special day to run RIOT?

I practiced Celibacy for 12 months (while and a bit after, my Wife was pregant) and it eventually earned me a promotion of sorts at work - I now only have to work 4 of the 8 hours I still get paid for.

Also (as I've just discovered these Post Replys have a timer), as far as I know of USA Diving - the Midlands have some great Quarry Dive sites, the Bahamas are great, as is the diving in the Great Lakes. I've just finished a book about diving on the Andrea Doria just outside of New York/New Jersey. Is there anything else that the USA has in regards to great diving?

...WGT: Is your Avatar a Humboldt Squid (a species gaining popularity off the Californian coast). For a Vampire Squid, I think my avatar makes me look more like a KKK squid.

...oh. And the USA has a great beer called Fosters too.

Oh yeah, even we stupid yanks know better than to drink Fosters :smilie39:.

One thing I did bring back with me was an addiction to Tim Tams. They only sell them about 6 months out of the year here in the US, so I've had to stock up since they won't get the next batch in until October. People thought I was crazy when I bought the last 20 packages when I found them at a local store. I love those little cookies. Damn, thinking about it made me hungry for one, I'm going to have to crack open package and then see if I can keep from eating them all in less than a day...

Vampire Squid
05-09-2010, 20:49
Yeah, Tim-Tams ain't too bad. Enjoy a nibble myself. Ever try Macadamia nuts and even the chocolate coated ones??

Australia has the x3 worlds best Commercial Diving Academies. You can perceive these as being the Harvard/Yale or Cambridge/Oxford of the Diving Academies ...many come from around the world to train at Hobart (the best) and Fremantle and Albury. The New Zealand training Academies aren't too bad either, but they tend to go a burn down Biker ClubHouses as a graduation celebration.

New Zealand is pratically dominating FreeDiving (Apnea) with a number of world champs and they are growing in the Technical Diving culture too.

I think USA still holds the Recreational cultural crown.

Vampire.. have you ever visited N America?

Vampire Squid
05-10-2010, 21:10
No - never.
I've been to the Himalayas, Thailand and I venture often to New Zealand - but this is because I don't enjoy flying I guess ...unlike my wife who has flown all around the world - even as far as Alaska and taken a cruise north of Norway.
I did say to my wife that I would fly to the USA (mostly for her and my new daughter) in about 5 years and visit Cape Canaveral (spell?) as my wife enjoys all of that Space Shuttle stuff and my daughter would enjoy DisneyWorld on top of that. I think in Florida I would be able to touch the lovely tropical waters of the Bahamas while there too if I'm lucky. I've never really experienced an authentic 'Tropical' Dive yet. My coastline is mostly Temperate = 3-7 wetties.
For a while I was reading an American Dive Mag called Scuba Training, but then I decided just to read the New Zealand Mag Dive Pacific, even ignoring my own Aussie Mags that just seemed to focus on photography and sucking up to the Australasian region (Indonesia/Malaysia) - I can ony take so much of a Mandarin Fish!

The shuttles are getting retired next year. So you'll miss the launches.

Sorry, looks like I will too.

Vampire Squid

Shame about the shuttle-retirement - I believe though that they brought on a good period for America to 'better itself' after competing with the Soviets for so long. I wonder whats around the corner for NASA next ....
Inventor. Did you invent what is depicted in your Avatar? If so - then 'efin amazing effort !! I love invention and am slowly (currently) making motions towards a new 'Fin' that will offer at least 25% better Comfort,Speed and Manouverability (Stability for Cave/Wreck Divers). The only problem here in Oz is that there is very few manufacturing opportunites ...most manufacturing is done in the USA.

Mardi Gras isn't a gay day......... Guess you have never been!

Vampire Squid
05-11-2010, 06:02
We have a popular 'gay day' (well its really conducted in the evening) in Sydney that is a Mardi-Gras. Don't particularly want to go and justify such an event. I would rather celebrate a day of Celibacy instead (especially in a very over-populated world).

Well I just dived the Lermontov Wreck in the Marlborough Sounds of New Zealand. At 171 metres long and resting upon its side in 30 metres of water, it was an immense and awesome experience. I think also that it is the biggest Wreck in the Southern Hemisphere. Available to Tech and Recreational Divers.
