Would you pay 200 or maybe 300 for 7 al 80s 5 running years from 82-87 two others one 93 one 94? I found 7 for sale just north of ft lauderdale for about 250 bucks. Could pick them up when we go down in aug. They all need hydro and are in good shape.
EVen if I scraped the bad alloy tanks I would still end up with less then 150 bucks in the newer tanks hydroed.

why due to the luxfer pre 88s or just cause there all old? Guess I could buy 3 new ones for the cost of the tanks plus hydro. Plus guess I would never need 7 tanks since I have three now. Given I know I want steels and will be getting them before next season. Though maybe my kids can use them to dive one day. LLOL that was a joke

Number of tanks is a different question, I usually need 6 (and maybe a couple spares) total for a weekend, that way I'm not running around looking for air if I'm doing any altitude diving. I'm thinking you might find a better deal out there.

There are better tanks than AL 80's for most northern divers. If you are going to buy them, why not get tanks with better characteristics for you and where you are going to use them?

(I made the 'northern' comment because sometime in tropical water, you don't want the negativity of a steel tank)

If you are going to end up paying $150 for the 2 "good" tanks after hydro, you might as well go buy two brand new AL80 tanks for a few dollars more.

I agree with most... no. In this quantity does not make up the difference in the scrap you are buying.

Big,

Have you not learned yet to avoid old tanks ?
You need to add in the cost of Hydros if needed, the eddy test every year and a vis.
Stick with tanks no older than 1990 and don't buy just because you can.

WOW! You mean I can buy all that used crap, worth about $200 (at the most) for the low low price of $1000? I may just have to burn a day of work (valued roughly at $300) and 2 tanks of gas (at about $120) to run down and grab that deal! :smilie39:

Damn people are so freaking stupid. That's not even $2000 worth gear brand new (and I told him so). I saw 3 pieces of equipment that was worth anyone buying... Reg set and 2 tanks. Maybe $300 if those 3 are in excellent shape (with a brand new hydro, vis, and reg rebuild)

I'd say majority rules and you guys are probably right. As for craigs list yes everyone on there is stupid. I saw two tanks listed with a old reg set for 500 bucks. The tanks where the old bad alloy tanks and out of hydro. The guy said the tanks alone are worth 400 bucks as new ones run 200 around here.:smiley29:

My favorite one was the tank bc and reg that looked older then larry for 1000 dollars. Guy said it was all one owner and he bought it new but was selling it to pay for his housing for college. So he must have been one old collage student

There are some good deals out there too. I bought three AL80's with an average price of $75. You have to sort through the crap though.

Your going to want steel tanks anyways, don't even look at the Al ones.

I think your right. The first three I bought was explainable. Dad needs tanks and it has us in the water about twice a week. No reason to have 10 al80s around for him when I will be going doubles.
