My boss is sending me to Hong Kong for 2 years. While it's exciting to live in a new place, I will sure miss Northern California's ocean and the abalone. Anyone know how diving is in Hong Kong? Is there diving within a couple hours' drive? Is water polluted? How is spearfishing there? I will be doing some researching and reading but any insight is appreciated.

I've never heard anything about diving in Hong Kong which makes me believe people don't dive there but you are alot closer to some great dive areas then you would be in N. CA. Checkout the Philippines, Indonesia, Micronesia, and Thailand for a start.

Yeah that's what I was puzzled about...I've never heard anything about Hong Kong diving. Plus it's a busy port... Maybe it would be like diving in New York Harbor???

You may wish to contact the referenced photographers for more info:

Nudibranch from Hong Kong › Nudi Pixel (http://www.nudipixel.net/locations/country/hk/)\

Plus:

Also, you can get just about anywhere from HK. Indonesian and Philippines diving is great. Not tried the other locations yet.

For diving from there, go to Malaysia or Thailand.

There is actually of lot of diving around HK. Not much of the close in stuff is any good I can report! Last time I went on a day boat from Sai Kung there were about 30 divers ranging in experience from 1st open water dive to mixed gas CCR. - like me most just wanted to get wet! Most dive shops have an associated travel business and dive club and manage to put together some very well priced regional trips eg Philippines, Thailand etc. In the early summer season, a daytrip to Pedro Blanco can turn up Mantas, marlin and even whalesharks.

Have a look at this forum (http://hkdiver.com/viewforum.php?f=22&sid=6cf931766fb698ed67eb3140344b0c70).

The forum is mostly in Chinese, but there's an "International" subsection which is communicated in English.

There's a BSAC branch in Hong Kong. Couple of our members used to belong to it.

Course, unless you're a BSAC member, they might not be able to help you. Worth a go though.
