Last Sunday my dad and I went out striper fishing on Beaver Lake with a guide to kick off spring break. The morning started off cold and slow. In about an hour and a half we caught two small mouth:

The guide felt we would have better luck at another section of the lake so we reeled in our lines and moved on. In the next spot we baited the lines with some shad and began trolling around. After a couple of hours and we few nibbles we finally hooked something. The line that was set out at about 65' was hit and quickly taken out to +100'. I grabbed the rod and began the fight of reeling him. Multiple times I had the line down below 60' and the striper would make a cut and drag the line back out past 100'. Finally, after fighting for 15 minutes I go the fish in and was shocked at what I saw. I was looking at 41lb 46" striper and I couldn't believe it. The guide was more excited than I was initially for it hadn't really sunk in what I had just reeled in and I was worn out from the fight.

That was the last fish we caught for the day but it was well worth the wait!

For anyone interested, the guide was Ed Chapko with E&C Guide. He was a blast to be out on the water with and all around cool guy. I would definitely recommend him if anyone is thinking about hiring a guide.

Congratulations. Beautiful fish. I go for stripers in the Hudson river every spring. They run all the way up to the Troy dam - I think about 150 miles. I sometimes go south to Catskill because that's about as far north as the really big ones come. We use herring and alewives for bait. They are fun to catch as well. It will be another month before they get as far as Catskill so I have some time to get my boat ready.

It was definitely a fun catch, I probably won't ever catch anything that will compare to it. My dad insisted on mounting it, and after the guide said he catches one that big maybe once a year I figured it's most likely a once in a lifetime fish and sided with them. I just wish I could see some of these fish while diving in Beaver!
