Can a diver spear a lion fish in COZ or do you have to be a divemaster or instructor? I am thinking about getting this for my next dive trip

Here is some video of my son on his first boat dive in COZ right after he got his PADI junior diver cert. For those of you who are squeamish there is a lion fish killed in this vid.

Do the little ones not have poisen spines?

Yep they sure do. The small ones if they sting you will cause some swelling and pain. Hot water helps a lot. Lasts about 2-3 hours.

The lion fish are very good to eat. I plan on going back to COZ in a week or so and spearing a bunch. They taste like grouper or snapper. The meat is flaky and white. Excellent in cerviche, grilled or fried.

It depends, outside the marine park you can spear. Inside the marine park some DMs will spear them others wouldn't and some would let you spear them others wouldn't.

Inside the park you are not allowed to do so just like you are not supposed to wear gloves; but if you do, you do it at your own risk should someone spot you.

Finally, if you happen to take the risk and hunt down lionfish anywhere, please don't do it at the expense of the reef or your own well being.

Well spoken.
