Folks from the DC area, Va, PA, MD, Ohio and WV go to Mt. Storm very regularly to do classes, practice skills and just dive.

Mt. Storm Power Plant uses the lake as its cooling water and the temps are typically nice most of the year. It is located in WV in Grant County and well known for good temps. Last week the water temps were about 85* F.

If anyone on this board knows it, dives it or wants to know more about it let me know.

The wife and I will be there tomorrow for most of the day. Stop and say hello if you are there. We would love to meet you.

How was the water this weekend? I am going to shoot to be there towards the end of october!

Temps still in the 80's. I heard from JimLap that the plant would be shutting down for maintainance around the 15th for 3 or 4 months. :smiley29:ACK. :smiley11: We are planning to be there Sunday. The temps should still be good till the end of Oct I hope.

What the diving like and how the access. Thought about going up there but have made the trip yet. I am from the DC area.

WV Diver

Access is easy enough, although there has been a little erosion at the waters edge. There is a designated area for divers to park and one for boaters. This area is prior to the boat ramp and you will see a sigh on a tree that says "SCUBA ACCESS".

Diving is good as the water is usually pretty warm. Mt. Storm Power Plant uses the lake for its cooling water and returns it to the lake at 100* F. The water temps have been in the mid 80's lately.

The weather can get you though. The altitude is 3,244' and the wind can be constant and bone chilling at times. So be prepared for the conditions. A quick check on the weather on the web is what I always glance at.

There are 2 platforms at around 25', one at 50' and one at 90'. Nice place to stay wet and prctice skills. Lots of classes go there. All the platforms are connected via a line system and navigation is fairly easy.

Vis can be 3' to 15' and I have heard of it being 20'+, I have never been lucky enough to see that for myself, but lately it has been 10 to 12', not too bad.

I saw my first freshwater jelly fish there a few weekends ago.

Come join us on Sunday if you can.

Looks like a nice place. Have to check it out when I get a chance. Maybe Nov. if the weather is not to bad. Is there anthing in there to see besides the platforms.

emcbride81
10-12-2007, 19:30
Not too much, a motorcycle, Xmas tree, some misc. little things. The platform are placed in a triangular form. If you are facing them, and you go to the platform on the right, there is a line that runs to the cycle, from there to the tree, from there the line runs to a rock wall that usually has some fishy's swimming around. Lots of catfish.

Some of our friends were to Mt. Storm last weekend and the plant is still running two stacks. Good news................but how long will it last?

I'd like to check out Mt. Storm sometime. Maybe I'll be able to meet up with some fellow DW Divers out there.

Why is the vis so bad there? Is it the plant that stirs things up or is it algae or something like that?

WV Diver
11-09-2007, 04:59
I spoke to an acquaintance of mine at the plant and he told me they are planning on having at least one stack going all the time during their maintenance period and will be back to full capacity possibly by the end of the year.

Usually the temps are of course dependent on how much the plant is running. They do not always operate at full capacity. It would be tough to guess. I have been there when water temps. were in the 40's. But usually temps are nicer than this.

Just have to keep a close look at this thread and see what people post. There are other forums that discuss Mt. Storm, that I watch, so I try to keep all the info on this thread current.

Temps have been reported to be 64*F on 11 Nov.

I haven't heard anything as of late of the temps on Mt. Storm, but I'm starting to think we could get a small poll going and see when the best time would be when majority of the members of DWDs could get together up there for a weekend or something, I know I'd love to meet some new dive buddies, and if enough of us end up going I bet we could get some good rates at the hotels. Let me know what you think, either through the thread or by PM

11-30-2007, 18:01
Got up there today, water was around 60 at the surface and at 50ft it was 57. The 7 mil with hood and gloves kept me toasty. The air temps got me tho, it was around 30-35 but with a 10 mph wind that made it feel cooooooold. Vis was consistantly 5-6 feet.

The weather in the parking lot is always worse than the water temps, at least when the plant is running. How many stacks were running? Glad you stayed warm while in the water though. Were there other divers there?

First off, a quick hello. I'm a first time poster on this board. I was certified in October and have had 14 dives since then. I'm located in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where I attend school, but I also spend a good deal of time in Virginia Beach, where I grew up. So with that out of the way - hello!

I'm curious if anyone would be up for a dive at storm this weekend? I'm hoping to dive Friday or Saturday (or both!). Let me know if anyone's interested.

I'm sitting here watching the Packers-Giants and the announcer says it is the third coldest playoff game in history. That made me wonder about temps at Mt. Storm. Has anyone been there or is it just too cold - even with heated water?

Kokomo
01-20-2008, 19:35
We've got the word out on various boards wanting to know temps but haven't heard anything. Here in Elkins it's about 10 degrees so it's probably about 0 up at Storm. They had only one stack running for a while and rumor had it that the water temps were in the 40's. I tend to believe that that is probably true.

emcbride81
01-22-2008, 09:32
:cold: Man, that is cold...I dont know what would be worse, the water or the air when you get out.

I tell you what, I am so glad I am going away soon, if I didn't have this trip my cabin fever may drive me crazy...er...

emcbride81
02-17-2008, 23:26
OK, JayJudge posted on one of the other boards that the surface temps were 56 on 2/16 and at 89' it was 47. Vis was normal 5-10ft...but the good part is 2 stacks were running so water temps shouldn't go down anymore!!! If the rain/snow breaks I may be there on the 28th. The air temps are supposed to climb to the 40's that week!

Kokomo
02-18-2008, 19:23

emcbride81
03-03-2008, 21:20
OK, todays dive at Mt. Storm saw 57 degree air temps, but the wind probably dropped that to mid forties. Surface temps were around 57, 56 at the two shallow platforms and 54 at the 50ft. Vis was normal 6-10 feet depending on depth. There were two stacks running at the time.

On a side note, the good Lord was taking care of us today. I forgot my surface marker, and as I was waiting at a buoy for my buddy to return from the truck, a Grant County Sherrif's Deputy pulled up. Either he didn't see us or wasn't worried about the marker since there was no boat traffic, cuz he just drove on past.

The Mountaineer Motel is about $40 a night I think and is only a few miles from the lake. Abrams Creek campground is a few miles further away from the lake (east) but a plot to pitch a tent is $15, plus $5 if you want to use their pre-cut wood.

Well, just got back from Mt. Storm and getting ready to head into work. First thing first, MOCEPTS good meeting you and your wife today. Good diving with you also! Hopefully we will be seeing more of each other as the season progresses. Sorry I missed you guys at lunch, we'll do it next time.

Mocepts was with a group from western MD, a real good bunch of people, so hopefully we can all hook up for some MADD diving.

Temps were 60 at the surface and 57 at the 50ft platform. Somewhere my computer picked up 52 degrees...I dunno where that was tho.

The plant was at full "steam" today, so hopefully the water temps will rise quickly! WVDiver, you should be there next, so let us know! I learned an intersting tidbit, the big tall stacks are only the runoff for the vents...here I thought the big ones were the gauge for how much the plant was using...guess I was wrong.

Looks like I won't be going to the Storm for PSD training on 7 April. One of the dive team members has been put on the DL with an ear infection. Training has been rescheduled for 19 May.

I know we (my posse and I) will be there diving long before then. Would be nice to have 70*F water.

I am planning to bring 11 students plus my 2 Instructors the weekend of April 18, 19, 20. About 6 years ago we stayed at the Mountaineer hotel and the Best Western another time. We found them to be very run down, Has that changed, or can anyone recomend somewhere else. By my research the closest hotels are in Deep Creek. Also, as it is a 3.5 hour drive from here, where do yinz guys fill your tanks now that the little dive shop closed.

I haven't been in the Mountaineer in a while, but from the outside not much has changed. My buddy and I have been camping most of the time at Abrams Creek. Joe Dubose from Scubaventures has a big trailer he parks at the old shop on the weekends, I am not sure if he brings a compressor or not. I will drop him a line and see.

Hey Mike,
I've been busy with on-line classes that I'm taking and have really missed dropping in on the forum. I learn so much from just reading what everyone else has to say.

Fla. was good. Loved Ginny Springs! First time I did a drift dive. What a hoot! We didn't get into the ocean though. Mark had to use a different dive boat and when we got there, he didn't like the looks of the operation, so he cancelled. I'll never get in the ocean!

Anyways, the group that wants to make a trip to Mt. Storm is Gail, Shane, Carol, and Bob. And of course myself. It'd be great to meet you and Kokomo there, so you can show us the lay out of the lake.

I'll keep checking back to see when you plan on going.

Dove the Storm yesterday in very windy weather. Sustained winds in the high teens most of the day with gust to 25 +mph. Whitecaps were high and curling, the boat dock was taking a real beating with a good section of the bridge under water.

Water temps were around 70*F on average with visibility around 7'-8'. We elected to not even put the boat in the water and shore dived the entire time. It was much nicer under the water than on the surface. We were training and never went beyond the first platform.

All in all a good day although conditions were fair at best on the surface. Needless to say there was no one else there all day.

The porta-potties still have not returned and at this point likely won't. I'm guessing.

I started us a Summersville Lake thread in this forum.

We (the wife and I) may venture out to the Storm this weekend but we are not making definite plans because we have so much to catch up on around the yard and garden. The spring weather here has been awful. It is suppose to be looking up this weekend so we need to get some things done, like finish planting the garden, mow grass, the usual.

If we come up it will likely be on Monday. I expect there to be a lot of folks there this weekend also. Another good reason to get the house and yard chores caught up. I figure there will be a lot of winter OW classes doing check out dives this weekend. We shall see.

Please post reports on conditions and crowds if you all get a chance over the weekend.

Thanks,

WV

UPDATE:

The porta-pottie situation is still going on. The power plant has been nice enough to keep these things on site over the years as a curtsy to the boater and divers. However they have been having recent vandalism issues with people tipping them over and just making a general nuisance of themselves. As a result these conveniences may not return. I understand they are exploring possibilities and discussing options in a effort to be able to continue this service. I hope it works out.

Eric, I saw a lady cleaning windows and such inside the old dive shop the last time we were there. I didn't stop but Joe Dubose's rig was there in the parking area. Maybe someone is going to reopen that facility, you should check into it when you are there.

I am not sure if Joe had anything to do with it, he was probably just parked there. We spoke to him briefly, prior to passing the old shop, at the dive site and he didn't mention anything about it.

06-04-2008, 17:47
Interesting...I will ask him next time I see him. That would be kinda ironic after what you and I talked about not too long ago.

As for the campground, there aren't any pavillions that I know of. I will double check to make sure though. If you wanted to we could grill out at my campsite, or I could bring a table to the lake and we could cook out there. I have several fold out tables, people would need to bring chairs. If someone wanted to bring some extra grub that would be great. I could spring for burgers/dogs. As we get closer we can iron out the details.

We were there both days and Sunday was the worst. I have never seen so many divers there at one time and I have never seen so many rude divers, course I guess they were mostly students, but you would think the instructors would at least try to be more courteous with their over-sized groups.

You didn't miss much, the vis was awful (1-3') and there were WAY, WAY too many people there. It was ridiculous.

We were there both days and Sunday was the worst. I have never seen so many divers there at one time and I have never seen so many rude divers, course I guess they were mostly students, but you would think the instructors would at least try to be more courteous with their over-sized groups.

It was a mad house.

That's crazy. I might have to try and sneak up there during the week to try and avoid the crowds.

Thanks for the info.

My wife and I are planning to head up to Storm on Saturday. We'll camp at Abrams that night. I am prob going to dive both days, wife is not a diver. If anyone wants to camp let me know, we could try to get sites close to each other...or if you just want to cook out we can arrange something. The weather scared everyone away. My wife and I went up Sunday morning, and had a great time. Got in the water around 9:30am, and we had the lake to ourselves. Turned out sunny and warm, viz was around 8ft, and the water felt great as usual.

Too bad guys, we were at Summersville Saturday and it was one of the most beautiful days I have ever seen there. No crowds, fair vis and great weather. We had a good time with Puffer Fish (member from TN). We've known him for years but this was the first time we had met him. Super guy.

Maybe we can try that get together later in the summer when the weather cooperates a little better.

Sometimes exiting can be race to see how fast you can get out of your wetsuit and into some dry clothes. I was there last Sept. 30th, but we had a really nice day weather wise. It was 70 degrees out that day, and the water temps were still 83 at the surface, and 81 at 20' - 25'.

emcbride81
07-13-2008, 22:49
If you dive there in Sept you would want to get in the water after 11am. Before then the air temp can be chilly. Last year a buddy of mine and I dove in Sept. (met Kokomo and WVDiver that day) and it was toasty water with air temps in the low 70's...which isn't bad in May or June, but when you have been used to low to mid 90's for a while, it can make ya shiver a bit!

Post up when you plan to be there, maybe a few of us can splash with you.

Mocepts, I am working Sunday. Now Saturday is even starting to look bad again! :(

HEY WV!!! Long time no hear! :)

I didn't know jellies formed at Mt. Storm...do they get plentiful or are there just a few here and there? What is there food source? I am assuming they are non-stinging microorganism eaters?

Also, I have been meaning to ask you, when I was certified back in 98, I remember the vis at Storm being 15-20 feet. What has changed since then that has caused the vis to drop so much? The only thing that wasn't there was the wall by the road...but I can't imagine that causing a huge drop in vis....unless my memory of those dives are bad.

Although under the right conditions they could be seen in large numbers and are scattered throughout most of the US. Here is a N.C. article about their biology.
The Appalachian Mountain Jellyfish — Western North Carolina Nature Center (http://www.wildwnc.org/education/naturalists-notes/the-appalachian-mountain-jellyfish)

And here is a link to the US distribution. http://www.jellyfish.iup.edu/US.html
Just click on the state you want to look at.

As far as the vis. It seems to be typical enough to me. If your cert class was in the spring or fall you may have missed the prime algae bloom and the vis would have been better than during the summer months. Late Sept and Oct are typically the best months for vis. though Mt Storm seems to have it's own ideas sometimes.

Just to run off at the head, we had a group of 11 from Central and Southeast Ohio spend the weekend at Mt. Storm. We stayed at Oakland, Maryland at the Starlite Motel, (clean, affordable). Had 2 great dives each day Sat. & Sunday. Wussied out on the 90' platform. Got down to 50' platform and found we didn't have enough flashlight power to keep going. All in all a great weekend and will definitely do it again. Beautiful scenery, nice people, etc. I want to take my wife and motorcycle there.

Only problem noticed was the lack of a hand rail getting down to the scuba access. One of our divemasters in training is a small lady, 5' 2" and maybe 100 pounds. We really kept an eye on her getting in and out of there. If that 3' tree stub gets taken out.... I don't know how hard it would be to put in a hand rail seeings how that is mostly rock, rugged terrain, etc. Probably take an act of Congress to get permission from Duke Energy. I would be up for a weekend of donated labor if anyone local could organize, secure permission, etc.

Great time in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia!!! :smiley20:

Surface: Pleasant and sunny but breezy, temps in the low to mid 70's by the middle of the day.:smiley20:

Water Temps: 76*F, 77*F with a noticeable thermocline around 35' with temps around 73*F, 74*F, at 50'.

We only used one tank today. :smiley11: Just a little too cool for a surface interval. So we changed, ate our lunch and hit the trail.:smiley9:

I met a new fella there, Steve, he and his wife just opened a dive shop this year in Morgantown. Very nice couple and Steve is a good instructor too, I think. He seems very thorough and patient. :smiley20:I watched a bit of the class at the platform. :smiley36:

Anyway you missed a good day to dive Eric. Mocepts and the wife were there and another fella I know from that other board (whose name shall not be uttered).

We all still need to do a dive together, and grill some dogs or something. Winter is a coming, and I don't dive dry.... yet.

The water was chillier than I had hoped today. I forgot to look, but I think only 1 stack was running. I saw 72 degrees at around 84', and dumb me, I only had my 3mil suit. Definitely started to get chilly about 50 mins into the dive. Still better tham not diving though.

MAD DIVERS!!

Short pause for dramatic affect.

UNITE!!!

It appears we have gone beyond the point of no return. By that I mean it looks like we will be having a BBQ regardless of the diving conditions.

Works for me.

Heck, it will be better in the water than on the shore with that friggin wind! :)

I can't believe we are going to do this! We're going to be miserable! :smiley13:

Nah, it won't be that bad! We can just bundle up in some warm cloths! Besides, when we are kicking around in the clear waters of Mt. Storm, we'll be toasty in our 7mils.:smiley20:

Wait before I say that, what are the water temps there right now anyway?

What do you mean if you even dive??? I'm diving rain or shine. It might be my last time for the year. I don't know what the temps are right now, but I got pretty chilly after about 45mins in my 3mm a few weeks ago. I'm definitely going with the 7mm this time. It should be nice and toasty.

FYI, I think I'm going to head up early that morning, and pop up one of those quick canopies. I might even try to rig some tarps so we have someplace to get out of the wind.

Conditions as of

Oct,19 2008
Air Temp 26- 58f

Water Temp 76f
Visibility 5-12 ft

This is off of Mt. Storm.com. If this holds true, I may not need a 7 mil...I am naturally toasty. I will bring it just in case.

Mo, what time are you planning on getting there? I will be happy to meet you to help get set up. Who knows, I may even bring an extra tank and get in a early dive! :)

I hope to be there around 8:30 or so. Is your wife gonna make it? My wife is going, but she won't be diving.

She told me she thinks she can. She may have a commitment that day, but she is going to try to take care of it on Saturday.

I will try to get there asap, but I can tell you it may be a little past 8:30. We shall see. If the other couple comes (haven't heard yet) we will surely be later than that.

I will dive if the topside environment isn't brutal. I have experienced the horizontal snow up there in dry suits. If that is the case I definitely will not be diving wet. I feel optimistic about it though.

No biggie. I'll probably just get there early and set up the canopy, and then head back to the Stained Glass to get some breakfast and coffee and let it warm up.

I feel good about the weather too. I feel a warm spell heading our way. :crossfingers:
