I bought one a while back, used it a couple times for practice. It seems really nice, easy to mount to my backplate with the grommets and easy to deploy. It seems difficult to deflate while in the water, though.

Wish I saw this earlier! Just picked up a reel this weekend. This would have mounted nice on my Brigade....

Looks cool, let us know how you like it!

I was hoping more people had one, and they could tell me what they thought of it before i got it myself. :smiley5:

It's nice that it comes with a finger spool too. The instructions say to inflate the SMB and then drop the spool to send the buoy up and have a reference line to the surface, but I think I would only drop the spool as a last resort. It would be a pain to have to retrieve it off the bottom and roll it back up all the time.

I have one of these mounted to the right side of the cumberbund on my Brigage. I got the stainless reel, and high vis line. I really do like it.

Dg, how thick is the high vis line? Is it overkill? I am thinking that I do not need 115 ft.

The high vis line is neon yellow, and is really just like a thick string. It is not hard to work with underwater.

LOL. Make sure you only do that with a delrin spool.

A SS spool will head to the bottom like a brick. Also be certain you snatch the spool back once the marker hits the surface.

It is really very cool to do. Inflate the bag and release. The spool will dance in front of your face as the line unspools.

Did I mention make sure to grab the spool again whrn the bag hits the surface?:smiley36:

How does this attach to Brigade/Ranger BCs?

I only thought you can attach this to the ranger, not the brigade....is it possible to add onto the brigade??!!! Im really thinking of getting one!

Also, whats the difference between the delin thumb reel and the stainless steel thumb reel...which one to get?

Delrin ins bareley negatively buoyant, so it will "hover" in the water. SS drops like a rock if you drop it. If you drop something on the SS, it may bend but will be OK. Delrin you can break, but it takes a lot. I'd say use delrin if you insist on a spool, but i'd recommend a spreel instead.

I just use an ordinary signal tube

The problem with a simple signal tube in an area where drift diving is the norm, a 3-5 minute safety stop can put you a fair distance fro the boat which is presumably staying with the primary float.
You want to send up your marker, at or before your safety stop. I carry 2 delrin spools. One has 40 ft of line and the second 75 ft.
