My wife has NO interest in becoming a diver, but she'll watch the ocean shows with me and she likes to snorkel. What is the deal with spouses or girlfriend/boyfriends that have no interest in diving? I'm one to try most anything once... but not MY wife!

What to do... What to do!?

If you want your wife to dive - tell her that it's probably best she doesn't because it's kind of a guy thing, she probably couldn't handle it, and you like your time hanging with the guys...

Maybe you should tell her that you don't want her to dive, or better yet that you won't allow it. I bet she'll be signed up for an OW course this weekend. smileys/smiley36.gif

Be supportive, tell her that it's ok and that you totally understand
her position. Then talk about how your next wife will probably really
enjoy scuba and how you're so happy you don't have to watch movies like
Brokeback Mountain with her anymore. I just showed my wife the pink Bio
Fins and she was in! Sorry, not trying to rub it in.smileys/smiley4.gif

I initially tried diving because 3rdEye was interested in it (always thought I'd be scared, even though I love the water and spent a lot of my childhood in it). It only took one vacation for me to become obsessed. lol

I've been trying for years to get him to ski, hopefully this year it will happen smileys/smiley24.gif.

Okay, on a serious note. Has she said why she doesn't want to at least try diving?

Maybe you should try a new angle...

1. Explain that it's a way for the two of you to spend some quality time together experiencing something new.
2. Is there something that she wants you to do or try that you haven't? If so, barter.

1. Hmm, that just might work! I could tell her the #1 benefit of diving together is we get to spend QT together. #2 benefit is we can't argue underwater!

2. Nah, she has no goals other than popping out kids... well she wants to go to nursing school but I don't see her pursuing that :)

I'm fortunate that my fiance got bitten by the scuba bug and is totally into diving now. She's already planning vacations and dive trips for us to go on. The downside is that all gear is multiplied by two. I can't say yes for me, and tell her she doesn't need it either...But it's great having someone you can dive with. Hopefully she comes around.

<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Tell her your regular dive buddy is a hot, blue-eyed, blonde who looks really great in a 3mm wetsuit.</DIV>

<DIV>On a personal note: my wife has infomed me that my divebuddies must be of the male persuasion. And, no...my wife doesn't dive either, much as I want her to. She can snorkel, though. She just hasn't been bitten by the bug. On the plus side, she's told me to feel free to go on dive vacations without her, so she's not holding me back.</DIV>

With me it was the other way around. Several years ago I thought about buying my husband his OW class for his birthday because at the time the budget was a little to tight to get us both started. Then I got thinking, "Wait a minute! I'd really like to try this too! Why should I let him get to do this first without me!"
<DIV>So no OW for his birthday! He was very sweet though and patiently waited until the budget allowed for us both to take OW and get a full gear set together.</DIV>

Im sorry if I seem tooo serious here. But just want to throw in a couple of pennies.

Dont pressure her too much. If she did decide to take up SCUBA so that
you and her could have a common interest and something happened due to
her feeling uncomfortable or panic in a bad situation, Imagine how you
would feel? Would you dive with a buddy that was prone to bolting for
the surface, or stressed out with wildlife approaching them? Diving with such a person puts you in danger. I am not saying that that is the diver she would become, I stating its a possibility with someone that is not 100% comfortable under the water. I could
list many reasons why people don't like to dive, but not understand one
of them. I dive because I love it.
If she loves to snorkel, then
snorkel with her on your last day of your dive trip. Be happy that she
doesn't knock you for participating in SCUBA. Also be happy that you now have twice the budget to spend on yourself for SCUBA. Tell her that these are the thing you bought for her, but because you love her, You decided that SCUBA may not be for her so you keep these items on your BC!!

I would love it of my wife learned to dive, but she can't submerge
without holding her nose. And the idea of all the mucus annd saliva-
especially the idea of sharing a reg, even with me, turns her stomach.

I also feel that if something happened, she would likely bolt for the surface, so it's probably best that she stays topside.

She enjoys snorkeling, and we do that together when we can.

Unfortunately the fact of the matter is you can't make someone enjoy something they have no interest in. I had that issue years ago when I first did my OW course. GF did the course with me, did OK in the classroom, OK in pool but when it came to the OW didn't go so well, and really didn't have the inspiration to keep up with it or the desire to figure it out.
<DIV>In the end there was very expensive set of snorkeling gear and an unfinished OW course.</DIV>
<DIV>One thing if you could get her to try a "splash" or discover diving, she may have some misconceptions that could be cleared up.</DIV>

My wife is the same way. Some people kinda push their spouses into diving which I don’t agree with. If they are uncomfortable with diving, how are you going to feel if something does happen to them? Diving is not for everyone. Just make sure you point out to her that when you go on vacation, you will be diving part of it though. <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Here is the story for some of you guys out there... Years ago and do mean YEARS ago!!! back when Larry first started diving him and his wife went to Grand Cayman on a trip and just before Larry climbed on the boat to go diving, his wife said </span>“this diving thing is going to be expensive" </span>Larry replied “not really I already have my gear and the boat dives are only60 bucks!” </span>She then replied </span>“No Larry the expensive part is while you're diving I'm shopping $$$$” </span>

So you can see the importance of diving with your spouse! </span>
