View Full Version : Healthiest Post Dive Bev.

divedeeper

I read in scuba diving magazine recently where all the editors put their fave post dive beverage. A few were "water", I think a likely choice for health reasons, but 90% were corona or other alcoholic beverages. Wouldn't alcohol further dehydrate after a while sweating in your wetsuit??

Anyway the point, healthy or not, what's your favorite post-dive beverage. Let's see who has the healthiest one,( some crazy carrot-prune somethin or other?) !!:smiley2:

Just curious

I usually drink water for hydration and then Arizona green tea with ginseng and honey for refreshment. I'm not exactly sure how healthy Arizona's green tea is but it sure tastes great!

Lots of water, and I eat oranges between dives.

After the last dive, it's a Corona (or twelve). No lime.

Water and maybe some powerade for a little flavor.

Water between dives. Enough water that I am hydrated after the dives, then I'll switch to tea or juice or something. Arizona ginsing w/ honey is a personal favorite for the road trip back home.

Complemented by beef jerky, of course.

Water and something with a little flavor...PowerAid maybe part of a coke...between dives. Then afterwards all the diving is done, and the gear washed a nice cold beer

i try and down a bottle of water or 2 during the SI, but in my opinion nothing beats swingin' in a hammock with a cold beer after a dive.

Water or diluted sports drink between dives to stay hydrated and an ice cold Shiner Bock afterwards.

I just had a power smoothie a few hours ago (would have to be a post dive drink at home) but it was better then I thought it would be. It had pumpkin, bananas, graham crackers, milk, yogurt and OJ. It was jummy.

Powerade/Gaterade during SIs, with a dark beer or three on the boatride back when done. That or Jack/Coke.

Hydration is important to diving, but staying hydrated is not something that one does just before diving, it's something that should be maintained. You should not have to down a gallon of water the morning of a dive to *get* hydrated. I drink water non-stop every day. If you got colorful PEE, than you need to drink more water! :smiley2:

I drink water before, between and after diving. However I gotta go with a good Cold Pale Ale for my after dive fave! :smiley20: A beer after a dive is not going to result in DCS! I moderate drinking heavily during a drive week. Who wants to dive with a Hangover! :smiley11:

Water before and after every dive. Well on a recent trip it was ice tea but normally just plain old H2O.

I drink a lot of water and the boat normally has Fresca on it. I've developed a taste for Fresca.

I start really concentrating on drinking plenty of water two weeks ahead of my trips. The rest of the time I drink decaffinated iced tea sweetened with stevia.....all year around. The only time I have a soda is with pizza....somehow pizza ain't pizza without a Pepsi.~

ha! maybe it's because the last time i was in cozumel was in my initial beer drinking phase...if i had to rank places based on their local beer i'd have to go to grand turk (turk's head) or st. vincent (hairoun)...ahhh....:smiley20:

There's no way I could ever drink alcohol after a day of diving.
I'm usually so drunk when I start diving that I couldn't possibly drink any more after I'm done!

Water for me, the colder the better.

namabiru
11-16-2007, 07:06
Beer of course. Water, naturally, during the SI. But then a nice cold beer. Or two. Or 10. Or something. No real restrictions on quantity. Sometimes I change and go through a gin tonic phase. But mostly beer.

Water or diluted sports drink between dives to stay hydrated and an ice cold Shiner Bock afterwards.
Good plan Ron! Diluted sports drink is where it's at. It hydrates better than sports drink, and replenishes electrolytes better than water.

have any of you heard of LAYING OFF of the carbonated drinks before going diving? my instructor said it was most wise but i'm having a hard time breaking the habit although i didn't use to have this trouble...lately i've been trying to avoid them because i'm getting certed just around the corner and so i've been trying to be good, but i've caught myself in teh middle of a pepsi without even thinking about it....oops...what are your thoughts on carbonated drinks or even gaseous foods....

TRACI
11-16-2007, 08:29
I try to stay away from carbonated beverages before diving, seems like they cause me to get mild heartburn while diving.

therealtreehugger
11-16-2007, 08:43
water water and more water
I have been in the habit of drinking lots of water for years before I started diving, so as long as I keep it up, I'm fine. I have to be a little careful not to over do it, now that it's that time of year for a dry suit.
I would imagine that if you drink (or eat) anything that would float right before you dive, you will be a little more buoyant. Including carbonated beverages. Or is your concern more the gas you are introducing onto your system? Comments?

moosicman
11-16-2007, 08:54
more so the gas into system thing w/ both drink and food....i may ask this on a separate thread to get a broader response.

Equal parts Orange Gatorade and spring water here. I'm kinda a creature of habit. Gatorade kinda keeps my sugar and electrolytes at a good level for multiple dives without having to eat solid foods in between dives. If it's real cold I may have a hot beverage after changing into warm clothes.

Silverlode
11-19-2007, 05:12
Water before, water during, and whatever the dive places offer after. No alcohol after diving unless no more diving the next day, then I might indulge.

11-19-2007, 06:47
I recall a case in Coz. where a diver came up from a near-deco dive (we're talking right at the no deco limits) got on the boat, shucked his gear guzzled a Corona and then preceeded to get bent. So, no alcohol for me. Well, maybe after a few hours, but not right out of the water.

It's either water or Gatoraid for me-that and an apple or bannana snack.

protein shake with some carbs would probably be the best thing....though not usually readily available

I usually have some water and some sort of carb beverage like iced tea or gatorade....if I'm on vacation, I'll grab something like a frozen blue hawaiian....you know, for the carbs :smiley2:

I have found that I feel alot better with a bottle of water and a nice PB&J on wheat bread during my SI I was just drinking the water but I was always SO hungry after a dive and started the sandwich thing just to take the edge off the hunger. Plus I am warmer with jelly in my belly.

Definitely water or some type of sport drink. Like alot of others, after the last dive and and a couple of hours, BEER.

I tend to be a little Hypoglycemic, so after all dives a good bottled multifruit puree drink really helps to start whipping me back into shape. Follow it up with about 12oz of water..Those purees can leave you with a tacky mouth.

Once boy is on land, no longer at the mercy of the sea, and no more boat travel is required, if I'm not driving....I'm thinking shots of patron and ice cold beer!

skbdogman
12-01-2007, 21:53
Gotta confess, I love a nice cold beer after a couple of dives. I always drive plenty of water, every day, not just pre dive day. I also run quite a bit so water is my main drink during the day.

I'm not advocating beer while diving, but I like a cold one or two after a day of diving!

i'll let you know after this trip what my new post-dive beverage may be...i got sick of kubuli down here so i switched to local cherry punch (and a PUNCH it is!)...but I hear Kalik in the bahamas is pretty tasty, and in bonaire i'm sure i'll have a polar or two...and honestly i don't know what to expect for virgin islands beer choices!

I usually drink water for hydration and then Arizona green tea with ginseng and honey for refreshment. I'm not exactly sure how healthy Arizona's green tea is but it sure tastes great!

That's my choice of beverages too. When I travel, I take the AZ green tea in powder form so I can mix it with water and still have my favorite drink.

01-22-2008, 20:26
Usually I like the green tea too. But last may on a trip to Key Largo, we finished our dives for the day, and a group from Australia brought out a bottle of Bailey's. Normally I'm not a big fan of Bailey's, but that really hit the spot.

But a cold beer will usually do just fine. The bad part about local diving is that I have about an hour & and half drive before I get that 1st cold beer. Thats where the green tea comes in.

Water is the way to go, caffeine is a stimulant it increases heart rate which in turn increases air consumption. Alcohol dehydrates you which dehydration is one major cause of DCS. So stick with H20 until after diving for the day is over. Then drink whatever pleases ya.

I don't need anything like that before I dive.....I'm usually already too hyped-up to sleep through the night, (can't wait to get in the water):smiley36:. I'm usually up at 6 am for a 9 am departure time and a cup or two of coffee and plenty of water on the way to the dive site usually does the trick.

Anything not caffeinated, and without too much sugar (i.e. sprite). That bening said, getting a little sugar back into the system in the form of juice or watered-down gatorade feels pretty good.
