Ikeep an old CD in my BC pocket as a backup signalling device in the event of being not seen.
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Have any of you guys got an idea that you think would be a lifesaver for the rest of us?</DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Larry. you could see about getting CD blanks printed up with the logo on as a marketting freebie or a box stuffer with bigger orders!</DIV>

That is a good idea. It's alot cheaper than those signaling mirrors, and probably works pretty good, too.

The whole CD idea is pretty good... I know they make pretty good prismatic mirrors. What might be a good idea for guys, is to put their personal info on the CD - address, scan of passport, medical info, emergency contact info, etc. Then you have a great backup of data... and if the mirror doesn't signal someone in time... at least they'll know where to ship the body!

And I know that sounds like I'm joking... but really, I think that would be a good idea! Dual purpose!

Oh of coz don't forget the CD will also make a good frisbie for some social gathering to overcome the stress, and a nice cyber-looking coaster for the hot chocolate after you got rescuedsmileys/smiley20.gif

Larry, you should start stocking them.

<DIV>Oh dear, I'm not very good at identifyingjokes sometimes ... http://www.scubatoys.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gifif that was a serious question then nope ... where would you put it?? I know some people take their car keys with them, but nothing else.</DIV>

Now talking about that, is that just plain car keys or car keys with remotes? Where do you put them smileys/smiley24.gif ?

<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Both. Obviously there's no issues with keeping plain keys dry but there are issues with the remote ones! This is just from comments I've read on the net. You can get little waterproof to Xm boxes that keys can go in and you just attach them to your BCD or put them in a pocket. I don't know what's wrong with keeping them in the boat??? Perhaps this is more for shore dives where you can't leave anything behind.</DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>If it were me I'd just take the plain key with me and not the remote one. Not worth the risk of water getting into the casing ... especially if you are somewhere remote and you can't get into the car or start it up!!</DIV>

thesmoothdome
07-21-2007, 23:23
I'd even be careful taking just the key. Most new car keys have some sort of transmitter in them. I have no idea how waterproof they are.

i used to put my dive card in my top pocket on my BC. Thats about it for me.

Oh, another idea I'd read about was taking an old dive torch, taking out the batteries and using that as a container for things - eg, keys. Probably only worth doing if you do have an old one lying around not being used.
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>My car is a bit older and has a 'manual' key and a electric one (with the alarm). I could lock my car with the key and keep the electic bit inside hidden somewhere. The only downside is that the alarm wouldn't be set. And I'm not sure how (leaving the electric bit inside) would affect your insurance if someone broke in.</DIV>

Um...if someone did broke in, you would just tell your insurance you locked your car and the alarm was set smileys/smiley36.gif

The cd as a mirror idea is really good- except cds don't work all that well when compared to a signaling mirror. I agree they are better than nothing, but if you have the few extra bucks, I'd get a good mirror/SMB and some sort of audible device- DAN makes a SMB with alll of them combined- it's a really good set up.

It might seem like a CD is the way to go, but it's not. A mirror works much better. I've seen both in action and know from personal experience.

The thing is, A CD is something we all obviously have just laying around until we can go out and order the real deal.
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>You can buy the Star Flash signal mirror that the Military use for a small amount: http://www.bestglide.com/Star_Flash_Info.html</DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>But my idea is for something you can take now.</DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>The other part of it is you could receive your next ScubaToys product brochure ona business card shaped CD and carry that in your BCD.</DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Even has a hole in the centre for sighting.</DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>It has to be better to have something than nothing, and a freebie from a dive company that has a secondary use is practically eco friendly.</DIV>

Another cheap mirror option is to get the locker mirrors they sell during back to school. $2 and you can cut it in half to make 2. They're plastic and durable.

If you get the mirror, use a label maker to make labels that have your
emergency contact info and stick them on the back. Iclude allergies and
insurance info.

Just a thought.

i like that CD idea, not to say "hey look at me"
but its good to have all of your personal info on it... and just right "IF YOU FOUND ME/MY BODY... PLEASE USE CD" or something to that extent... (list allergies and what not on the writable side, and have med. hist what not on it and label it appropriately.
im gonna do it before i go out again.
thanks for the idea.

Doesn't a DAN tag offer this kind of info?

Yes, the DAN tag has personal information, and comes with a mirror as well. I got one for myself, but I haven't decided if I like it. It is kind of big; I have it attached to a shoulder d-ring, and it tends to float in my field of vision occasionally so I may need to find a better spot for it. If nothing else, I may just put it on my gear bag.

CDs are probably better than nothing, but I read about tests done with them somewhere, and they didn't really work all that well in practice. A signal mirror was far superior.

As for keys, I just keep mine in the pocket of my drysuit's undergarments. ;)

Ok, seriously, if you're diving wet from your car and need a place for your keys, the best idea I've seen is a realtor's key lockbox. You can get them for about $35 from the Real Estate Super Center (http://www.realestatesupercenter.com/). Insert key, close the combination lockbox, clip it to the towing points under your car, and go dive!

Actually, a CD is relatively ineffective as a signaling devise. Only 20-25% as effective as a small plastic signaling mirror.

An excellent article about what works for emergency signaling is

Hmmm... If somebody wants an attention ( emergency equipment gear ). I know a place which you can buy a green laser pointer. Military type, oh boy this thing is visible in 10,000+ yards. It's even visible if you pointed it to the moon. I have one of these on my rifle and very satisfied with it's range and visibility. And I know you'll probably ask if it is underwater capable? YES it is!!! At optics and laser store nationwide it's around $150 to $250 but with the place that I know it's only $60.
