I'm looking to purchase my first regulator. I am a newbie who will be diving 3-7 times per year, warm water and recreationally. I am looking at the Mares Proton Metal 12 right now. Anyone have any reason why I shouldn't go for it? Any other regs you would point me to?

Nope, no reason at all to not go for it.

Never used the Mares but I've only saw good things about them

Decent reg. No objections, as long as you have a good shop you can trust to service your regs.

I'll note that there is not much financial incentive to owning your own regs if that's all you will be diving per year. Much cheaper to rent, since regs have to be serviced every year, and that alone will cost more than renting them on such an infrequent basis.

Financial considerations aside, I definitely recommend owning your own gear. And you may find you dive more locally when it's more convenient!

Nice regs, I'd go for it.

For me, the convenience of diving on a whim is worth the expense of owning your own gear.....as a matter of fact, now that I am thinking about it, I might just run over to the lake and go for a dive tomorrow.....
