Last year, my winter project was to put together a "Midwest Dive Log" complete with specific dive location and GPS coords of dive spots such as the Zeb in Table Rock, Duck Island, Coptor Cove at Beaver, etc. I have this is a Word Format. If anybody is interested send me an email at nagel1990@charter.net. The file is too big to post here.

This year I thought, what we really need is information about dive trips such as a good hotel/motel to stay at or a good camping location or a good dive operator. I could easily google all this, but what I really need is information from all of you. You know who is good and who to stay away from. So my challenge to you is can you provide me with information on planning a dive trip in the midwest. Areas such as Table Rock, Bull Shoals, Norfork, Oranago, Mermett Springs, etc. I'm sure there are other places as well.

Information I'm looking for:

1) Name the Dive Location.
2) What is a good hotel/motel in the area - Phone numbers would be great, a short bio of your experience, GPS Coords if you have them.
3) Any good camping in the area?
4) Any air fill locations?
5) Any place to stay away from?
6) Any specific Dive Shops or Dive Operators in the area - good or bad?
7) Any good resturaunts in the area? Anything to stay away from?
8) Does anybody give any "Diver Discounts"?

I think you get the picture. The more information the better. If you would be willing to share this information, I surely would appreciate it. I plan on putting all the information together and if anybody would like a copy let me know.

Thanks,

Dive Training Magizine has places through out the US. U could probably get one of those magizines and look it up on the we site. I don't have the web site off hand. But they also list what's available and what's not.

I started a post about Pearl Lake in South Beloit IL. (by WI border above Rockford). 37 acre lake with a sand bottom. And a bunch of stuff sunk including a sub and a plane. Depth up to 85'. They do Air fills, have a very nice campground, and a resturant. I use Loves Park Scuba as my main LDS and this is just a little south of the Lake. Loves Park also does charters to Lake MI, and Lake Geneva. I would love a copy of your final list, thanks, Darin

A final list of dive sites I would also like a copy. Will U post it that anyone can get a copy when it's complete?

My in-laws live in Rockford, never really thought about diving when we go to see them but why not...

Dive training mag doesn't list all the spots we dive at and they've lied in some of what they have posted. The Table Rock Oasis story is a lie for example. I don't exactly trust them after discovering that they'll lie and don't proof the submissions they get.

Pearl Lake is fun, but if you have the time try to set something up for Lake MI, Check out www.lovesparkscuba.com (http://www.lovesparkscuba.com) Dan goes to some nice wrecks. If you drop a note in this and the Great Lakes forum with your dates we might be able to get a boat together.

We won't be heading north until the summer (we've lived in Fl and AZ too long to venture north at this time of year), but I'll keep all of this in mind as we plan our trip...and I'll let everyone know what the plans are.

Cummings66 I haven't been diving probably not as long as U. And haven't found out about ALL the places 2 dive. I'm working on that. So I'm just going with what I know and that is Diver Training Magizine. If they lie or not....................?????????????????

Let's just say an underwater city in the heart of the United States is such a cool story....it has to be true, so print it.

This is kinda what I'm Looking for:

Mermett Springs
Located about 6 miles north of Metropolis, Il (closest town).
$20 per day entry fee.

Some camping available at the Quarry - no electric or sewage hookups. Basically, primitive camping only right on edge of quarry. I think $5 fee per night to camp.
Air fills available at quarry - regular and nitrox
Some dive accessories available at quarry.
Don't know of any Dive Shops in area.

Amerihost Hotel in Metropolis (203 E. Front Street (618)521-2225). Very nice hotel offers diver discounts. Very nice breakfast bar included. Within walking distance of Harrahs Casino. Need to book rooms early especially if something is going on at the quarry or at the casino. Fills up quick.

Fort Massac State Park in Metropolis. Very nice state park offers all types of camping. Clean showers, bathrooms. Can tour the Fort no cost. Located in Metropolis. I think $15 per night for electric hookup.

Nice burger joint downtown Metropolis a block from the 4-way. Can't remember name. A Mexican resturaunt down the street from Amerihost. Caters to divers and a lot of divers meet up here during the evening for drinks & bull sessions. We ate there. Really not the greatest Mexican food.

I know I liked the Swiss Inn in Eureke Springs, price was $39 per nite 2 queen beds and it's about 10 miles or so from the lake. C&J is a great shop to deal with for gear, fills, etc. There's more good places to eat than can be humanly listed in Eureka, there's one every block it seems.

Don't have to dive long to get to know the dive spots, heck, a person could do that in months if they wanted to.

But, as far as the mag is concerned my statement is meant more to tell you that you can trust the site they tell you is a dive spot, but I would not trust their description of the things like vis, depth, attractions under water, etc. without prior verification through outside sources.

Good point. Mine La Motte was noted in a recent issue of Dive Training as having air-fills on site. Anyone that has been there knows they don’t have anything.

That's my beef with them, they don't proof the articles turned in. It seems all they do is print them and that's as far as they take it. So, I don't trust them very far beyond the location.

I guess in the end part of our predive planning is supposed to be checking out the details like this and getting our ES numbers down, that type of thing.

I think an addition to Nagels list should be the local EMS and how it's activated if needed.

Okay, bare with me, I'm going to try and attach what I have so far to give you a flavor of what I'm trying to put together.

Hopefully, this works.

Good luck with that, I tried to get them to print corrections and they were not that interested. They did offer to forward my email to the editor but from that point on there was no response.

The best source of info on the dive sites is on boards like this, and to be honest in the midwest I think that SB still has the best data, ST's is getting better but needs more input.

I tried in the beginning to setup something like that with my postings about table Rock and Beaver Lake, plus some others but it didn't catch on. I think the doc file being put together is great, he did a fine job on the other and this one should turn out just as well, combine the two and we've got something worth pinning as a sticky.
