I'm in as long as it isn't the weekend of the 12th (DUI Tablerock).

Does anybody know any good places to camp? I've got a motorhome and this would probably work out for me.

Ok I am definantly planning on doing it over a weekend. I really like the first weekend in April. As for places to camp. There is a big army corps campground right across the road from Lou's shop there is also another real nice one at jordan marina. And the bluff by the campground makes a nice night dive. I am pretty sure both have hookups for RVs as well as tent sights.

What are the site features this lake offers the diver...never been to this location..? Is it similar to near by Bull Shoals? :)

billucusdiver
01-25-2008, 17:35
As far as site features you can just about have your pick. There are several cabin crusers, a bull dozer, several nice wall dives and a couple of dives around some big chunk rock. There are also several old home sights in the lake. Most have been reduced to rubble and foundations. You can also dive the old bridge at henderson. Norfork is different from a lot of our other lakes in that before it was built all of the trees were taken out. There is very little standing timber. There are however a lot of brush piles which people have sank to make fish habitat. Oh and the Vis especialy in the early spring will get to around 40 feet.

Sounds like a great dive lake....I have only dove Bull Shoals up in that general area...it was nice also. Thanks for the info. and insights.

My normal day off would be the April 12-13 th, but it's possible I might be able to take a day off work if we get a date firmed up about a month in advance.

I'd like to dive there, haven't been and it'd be another tick mark...

Nice Avatar Robb, did you by chance do that at Beaver? That's my technique of no squeeze on the feet while waiting for the others to get in, it works great doesn't it.

what will the water temp be

cummings66
01-31-2008, 22:30
Cold enough that a drysuit would be nice. Warm enough to do maybe one dive in a wetsuit, a thick wetsuit. Two if you're a tough sucker.

I've seen 50's to 60's that time of year.

I still have to work on the wife as she's going out of town that same weekend and can't take our son with her-he's too young to appreciate diving yet (he has tubes in his ears so he still can't dive and takes after his mom on his fear of water)

But, I will go on a limb and say I am coming!!!!!!!

Besides, gandma is only a phone call away.

billucusdiver
02-03-2008, 12:49
It should be a fun trip. I have put together a preliminary itinerary.
Depending on how many show up on Friday and what time. We could do a night shore dive. Saturday I figured we would load the boats with two tanks a piece and head out to dive untill we are out of air. Lunch will take place at Jordan Marina where we can have fresh made pizza, and get tanks filled. Then in the after noon hit some of the shallower dives that Norfork has to offer. Then Sunday we can do it all over again, untill the restraints of our everyday lives make us call it a weekend.

I have talked to the folks at Jordan and they say that the camp ground there opens sometime in Aprill. However you can still camp there for free when they are not open. The power just wont be on. They are also going to check and see if some of the cabins in the area and the bunk house will be open that weekend.

cummings66
02-03-2008, 23:01
I've already passed the date along to Greg, I know he's up for it as long as he can get out of work.

I know I'm looking forwards to it, haven't dove there and it's always fun seeing new things, like the bottom of ice for example. Wild looks, and fun things to do.

billucusdiver
02-07-2008, 18:21
Robb, Any time man. My boat is sitting in the marina waiting for divers. The vis will not be very good untill around April. Norfork clears up in the early spring and will stay clear untill sometime in June. Oh and sorry that you have to go dive in that hot water. I feel for ya man.

Hey Bill, can you give any info/update on lodging?

billucusdiver
02-09-2008, 09:34
We can have use of a mobile home at my buddy lou's place. It has three bedrooms. He may also have one room available which has two beds. Other than that we can get ahold of our friends at Jordan marina, they have several small cabins and a bunk house which may be available by that time. You can also stay at Whispering woods they have really nice rooms. And of course you can always camp. There are two really nice campgrounds, one at Jordan and the other just below the dam.

I don't think we said anything about being good did we? Wait, I think it was said to be good vis.

To be honest I love new dive spots with good friends, no matter how it turns out you have fun.

billucusdiver
02-10-2008, 20:32
I have one more spot open on my boat. The other boat will handle 8-10 divers. If that is not enought we could also rent one from Jordan, they have a couple huge barges.

Who is bringing the Walmart no bake cookies?

Forget the cookies. You live in Springfield man, bring me some of the Krispy Kreme donuts.:smiley2:

It's funny, I can tell you what the water temps will be like within a few degree's, but I'm not sure I can tell you what the surface temps will be. The reason behind that statement is maybe a BBQ would be nice during the SI. Not a real BBQ as that takes almost an entire day, but rather grilling of hamburgers etc...

texdiveguy
02-20-2008, 21:43
Not a real BBQ as that takes almost an entire day, but rather grilling of hamburgers etc...

Its funny but I eat very little while on SI.....stay hydrated and take in fruit/granola bar but thats about it. NOW after the days diving I do enjoy a good meal!

cummings66
02-20-2008, 22:18
I'm not against eating and prefer snacks myself, but if I eat I kind of like a nice hamburger. It doesn't affect me much, well, sometimes greasy foods make me a bit unhappy but it would without diving too.

My normal snack is something like a honey bun or hot apple pie. You buy those small 50 cent pies at Walmart, place them on your dash in the Summer and when you're done diving they're like you just took them out of the oven. Peach and Blueberry make good snacks that way. The donuts also are nice done that way as well.

Otherwise, during a SI I really prefer to drink something like water.

navyhmc
02-20-2008, 23:23
Water is a must, stay hydrated. I am a fan of a good complex carb snack and some fruit-banannas are preferred due to the high magnesium and potassium content-keep the leg cramps away.

But there is somehting that can be said in favor of chocolate chip cookies and oreos too.

Well Payne, I think you fart in the tub and bite the bubbles!!:)

Seriously though, one of these days everything will work out to where I can make it! My instructor is moving, so I have to cram in as much as possible in the few weeks that he is still here.

We usually get a pizza at jordan marina on our SI pit stop.

cummings66
02-22-2008, 18:25
I saw their Nitrox fill prices are $9, that's pretty good really. My tanks aren't clean right now and I don't think I'll have them clean in time so it's kind of moot for me, but others might like that.

billucusdiver
02-24-2008, 10:17
Lou can also fill nitrox now and I think he is a little cheaper.

navyhmc
03-07-2008, 05:03
I hate to tell you folks this-especially since I have been looking forward to not only a Norfork dive but meeting up with all of you, but I am not going to be able to make it in April. The cost for me to get there from Wichita is quite literally $500 for the round trip (not counting food and lodging) My current finances are such that I can't afford that big of a hit right now.

All I can say is that I am truly sorry that I can't make that weekend-especially since I have been really looking forward to the trip and more importantly to diving with a buch of good folks.

Can you guys find it in your heart to forgive me or do I have to turn in my He-man, woman hater dive club membership. :D

Who is still planning to come at this point?

billucusdiver
03-17-2008, 17:54
The locals at norfork say that the vis is clearing up. Should be real nice by the first weekend in April.

cummings66
03-18-2008, 12:47
I've made a mistake, I have a scuba course coming up on April 5th so I can't go, as much as I'd like to do something fun it's a work day for me, at least a learning one.

Greg I think is still planning on it, he'll let me know tomorrow.

cummings66
03-18-2008, 17:45
The locals at norfork say that the vis is clearing up. Should be real nice by the first weekend in April.

Did you know the ramps at Jordan marina are under water, the water is very high there right now. A buddy told me they're about 10' high, but surprisingly the vis as of this weekend is still fair. Might be bad today though.

billucusdiver
03-18-2008, 20:00
Yeah it is high. Payne and I dove there last weekend. Luckly the boat is already in the water so we wont be needing a ramp.

billucusdiver
03-19-2008, 16:47
So who else is for sure coming?

cummings66
03-19-2008, 21:01
Greg has all but said he's coming. I know he's trying to find a place to stay last we talked.

billucusdiver
03-20-2008, 18:26
I talked to greg the other night. He is in. I taked to the people at Jordan today. They said the water had came up 14 feet in the last 3 days and vis was about 10 inches. I am not to sure this will settle out real quick.

cummings66
03-21-2008, 18:41
I hear the pain, I really do. I'm thinking of diving tomorrow but it's probably going to be a real low vis dive since there was a lot of flooding in the area. I just don't know if it's worth the money for me to drive 250 miles round trip tomorrow to discover I could have stuck my head in a mud pit close to home for the same effect. Greg will split the costs with me so I'll probably go anyhow and hope for something more than 0 vis. Gordon seems to think the roads might be either under water or so muddy you can't pass.

However, we do have an advantage there which I don't have in Eugene tomorrow, a scuba shop that is right there who can report the vis as it changes.

medicdiver
03-22-2008, 07:07
If it didn't rain anymore before the first weekend in april, how much of an improve will there be in the Lakes and Quarry's?

cummings66
03-22-2008, 13:05
To be honest, in my area I'd say 2 to 3 weeks to see it get better. It's pretty ugly here because there is still ground water trickling in. If we had no rain and warm temps it might be faster, but you're got to consider our rivers haven't even crested yet and that's got to happen before things start getting better. As long as the water continues to rise that means water continues to flow strongly where it didn't.

As to Norfork, it's a large area so I'd bet it'd be much faster at improving compared to a small quarry. Lakes tend to get better quickly. I'll bet it goes up within a week.

billucusdiver
03-23-2008, 10:53
Yeah, I it has a good chance of clearing up before the first weekend in April.

cummings66
03-23-2008, 15:36
That's what I like about lakes compared to quarries. They tend to change temps slowly and clear quickly where quarries are the opposite.

Bring the Payne
03-31-2008, 17:38
Looks like we are doing this trip another weekend. The vis is going to be pretty bad so I think we should wait a week or two.

billucusdiver
03-31-2008, 18:19
I agree. The whole area has been getting hammered by rain. I think that the vis will be much better by the 3rd or 4 weekend in april.

cummings66
03-31-2008, 22:13
If it ever quits raining. It's been pretty wet so far.

billucusdiver
04-01-2008, 17:34
No joke I dont think it is ever going to quit. I talked to Dan at jordan marina today. He said it is pretty much a muck bucket. It is just all stured up from the rise in lake leavel and temp.

cummings66
04-02-2008, 18:08
Table Rock is supposed to be the same, puddle of mud for the most part.
