Have you all gotten your new Scuba Diving Magazine in the mail? I got mine yesterday and immediately noticed the larger size of the magazine. The jury is still out for me...

What do you all think of the new size?

Just signed up for it a few weeks ago. So my first issue will come in a few days to a month. Who knows..... I might just stop by a borders and take a look in the meantime.

pictures are fabulous!! mag size is clumsy for my small hands. I just have to fold the mag differently. there seems to be quite a bit of unused white borders in the mag, like they ended with more room than they anticipated. still a great mag!!

Its fine.

I like the new size, just fine. I've decided I'm not a fan of the new layouts, though. The pictures are great, as usual, but I'm not a big fan of how they have changed the borders and text layout. A bit too cluttered at times, for my taste.

However, to win the new wetsuit, I will be writing them a letter shortly telling them how much I LOOVE the new everything......etc...

Ehh....not real crazy about the size. Just my 2 pesos.

I've always been told size doesn't matter:smiley5:

Whatever-it still TOTALLY lacks substance.

02-12-2008, 17:18
yep I think its too big too. They must have recieved complaints from the older readers.hahah JK

Same here, it's oddly oversized.

I noticed the same thing. I think they must be going for the "sears-roebuck" effect (IIRC). Long ago, sears used to produce the largest catalog, so when mom stacked everything up nice and neat, it stood out from the rest and got looked at more.

Still the same tourist mag with almost no substance though.

I'm not a fan of the bigger size...not to mention the post office folded it to get it in the box

I like the mag, but I have all the old issues on the bookshelf and this one sticks out. Its a little big and I am not sure if it is necessary. I loved the picture that was on the cover last month and thought it would have been nicer for this months cover.

Agree on substance and clutter... didn't get much from the new issue.

i like the lessons for life, and i did like the new DAN article on medicine, but other than that, same old stuff, just bigger. I'm a big fan of Dive Training, my self. It's always got some good info in it.

Now we have to buy a new magazine holder for the bathroom! :smiley21:
Actually, I much prefer Dive Training and Sport Diver for content.

I got my copy with and envelope attached that said it was their best offer yet for renewal. Then inside was a lower offer... do these people read their own copy?

02-16-2008, 23:10
The new size is okay, but the content is still the same: pretty pictures, but not many useful words to go along with them.

What I find oddly confusing are the multi-page ads for Stuart Cove's Dive Bahamas resort. They show the guy in the chain-mail suit fork-feeding the sharks. Hasn't the matter of not altering natural behavior in wild animals been taught in the Bahamas? I happened to see a video on-line that showed their shark handler trying to bring fish out of the chum container. There were so many sharks, and they were really getting physically brutal with this guy and with each other. This is quite an antithesis for a magazine that promotes safe diving and respect of nature.
Also, is it me or do the ads make their resort look like Disneyland on acid.:smiley29:

is the print bigger too? i read in last months mag (picked it up for free at LDS, not a subscriber) that the print would be getting bigger because a lot of readers mentioned the size. is the magazine the size of rolling stone now?

Advanced diver has much better content, but it is PRICEY!

02-17-2008, 08:27
Yup, even the E-Zine from them is better. Well worth reading IMO.

I can get used to it. Not a bad magazine. I like it and Dive Training. I just got a subcription for 2 years of Scuba Diving for $20 from the expo yesterday.

Wow! $25 for four issues is high! Is it worth it in your opinion? Is the e-zine format just as good?
