Anyone have any suggestions for insurance for my camera equipment? I've already tried through Senn Dunn (the company DAN refers to for insurance for dive equipment) . Although DAN considers me a US resident for their insurance purposes... Senn Dunn does not. My mailing address is in the US, but I have no physical address there since I am physically in Japan due to military orders. I have a drivers license (with my military address on it) and I'm registered to vote in Florida. Since I was living in Florida at the time that I came back on active duty the end of 2001, Florida is considered my "home of record". Legally I am still a resident of the State of Florida. I explained all this to Senn Dunn. First they tried to blame it on "insurance regulations". When I asked for specifics they just quit responding to my email. I know that it is only a matter of time before my housing will flood... I would really like to find insurance somewhere before that happens!

Try DEPP (www.awry.com) and NikSecure (http://www.niksecure.com/). Both have good reps.

FYI, NikSecure is out of business.

Oh, and the DEPP page is now http://www.equipmentprotection.com/

Doh! Well, at least it was a recent event.

Oh, btw, I typed that first address wrong (from my faulty memory). Should have been: http://www.awryinc.com/

(But yes, that other link works too)

At least the faulty memory link was an interesting one, if you haven't checked it out it's worth 3 seconds to do so.

Thanks guys... can't begin to tell you how irritated I am with Senn Dunn. To me it seems rather discriminatory against the military. I have a US address and I'm a US citizen. No difference if my camera floods while diving here in Japan while I'm stationed here and someone coming to Japan from the US and having their camera flood while they are diving here. It will be the same claim either way. I complained to DAN and they basically said that it was up to Senn Dunn. They were no help in this situation at all.

I'm using a relatively inexpensive camera right now (Canon A630) so although it would be a bummer, it wouldn't be catastrophic. But I'm looking at eventually moving up to a Nikon D200. That would be a whole different story! I'll contact DEPP and hope that they will be able to help.

Thanks again!

Have you tried you homeowner/rental policy? You can add a rider pretty cheaply.

I hadn't thought of that until you suggested it. I don't have homeowners since I don't own a home (I've been overseas for over three years now). You're suggestion reminded me that USAA offers a renters policy that is good overseas for military members. Thanks for reminding me, that's a really big help :-) I will definitely look into that :-)

I personally use DEPP. I've never had to file a claim, but from what I've heard they're easy to get compensated. I'm not sure if it's still the case, but their policy has been to replace the equipment rather than just give you a cash settlement.

Thanks! DEPP has been recommended by a few people. I sent them an email. Just got a response and she said FPO addresses are fine. At least now I know I'll be able to get insurance :-) Now I just need to figure my budget for that D200 ;-)
