Exactly! I've used the plain old leaf garbage bags a few time to seperate things that remain damp.

Another yup! If you plan on doing any six-pack (small boat) diving, you need something small enough to stuff under the seat once you remove you're gear. Any of those large rolling fancy travel 'dive' bags aren't going to fit ....

I agree that the leaf and lawn bags would be a good option, though would prefer to not have to worry about the bag being overweight due to the moisture...but that would be with lawn bags or without.

I already have a nice mesh dive bag for boat diving...have used it and found it to be perfect. There were several folks on-board who did have the big roller bags, and boy did they get in the way.

I guses I am trying to justify the wear and tear vs. cost vs. weight savings along with avoiding checking a second bag, if I can avoid it! Thanks for the helpful hints!

I'm also planning on putting my gear in an ordinary luggage bag. But what are your thoughts on regulator bags? Are they unnecessary if you're going to put them in carry-on, anyway?

I use a dedicated Stahlsac reg bag because I have it - it was given to me in part of an equipment deal that I took from a shop that owed me back pay, I didn't buy it. It's nice, but I wouldn't go out and buy a specially made/dedicated reg bag, I'd use a laptop or portfolio case instead. Much less expensive, and since I'm carrying it on I really don't need any extra padding on the bag.

Found I never used my reg bag as it took up too much space in my carry-on.

I'm right with you. We keep having to downsize our luggage to meet the airline restrictions. Now with the extra charges, we're running out of ways to downsize enough to avoid the extra bag charge. So, like you, I'm weighing the options of a rolling carry-on. I like my current small square carry-on that will slide under the seat in front of me, but as I stuff more of the heavy stuff into it, it's getting harder to lug around when dashing thru the airport. And if I go the rolling carry-on route, I figure next they'll reduce the carry-on limits - or start charging for that as well!

Thanks for everything. I've still got some time to weigh the options, but I think the largest legal carry-on is probably the route for me... no matter if it's a "dive bag" or just regular luggage. I think the stress of not having my equipment within reach during my travel would increase the discomfort of my flight... "will it make the transfer?" "are they throwing it around?" "is someone going to take it?".

As far as the 5 mil in Cozumel... it's what I own, so that is what's coming with me. I suppose if I find it too warm, I can rent or buy there. oui, non?

Thanks again!

One would think that a wetsuit would be dry by the end of "no fly" time.

getting this bag Porter 65

Will test getting all the essential equipment and clothes into it, will give a report.

It fits the "lowest common" size for carry ons 22x14x9. Since some of my flying is non rev, checking bags is not an option - sometimes. It will be that or sending ahead via FedEX

I have this bag..

JanSport Super Break® 22 Expandable Upright (Closeout)* > Small Rolling Luggage > Luggage - eBags

With this backpack..

https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/c.../501-5700.html

The backpack has a lower compartment where I put my reg. I put my cameras & computer in the front pouch. Put my mask in the top opening.

In the carry on, I can fit my BP/Wing, swimsuit, a change of clothing & my laptop.

Then I have one checked bag that has my mesh bag for the boat, my fins, wetsuit and other clothing for the trip.

That is to get there, and seems to work best as far as limiting my exposure to loss of checked bag. On the return trip, sometimes I will put my reg & mask in the carry on bag, put the laptop in in backpack and check both bags and just carry the backpack for the return trip. I figure if my gear gets delayed on the return, its not that big a deal as it would be on the front end.

[quote=waytooslow;217522]One would think that a wetsuit would be dry by the end of "no fly" time.

You would think so, but I don't know if it's the humidity or what doesn't allow things to dry. Wetsuit, not a problem because it is a 2mil shorty. My issue is with the BCD. The thing is always still damp by the time I'm packing.
