Do you carry on or check

In a delima. How many of you carry your gear on plane and how many check gear? I've checked mine before, but that was with only one change of plane. Going on trip in Sept. will be changing planes 3 times.

I carry on my regulator and computer. Fins, mask, and BC are checked.

Computer goes with me, and sometimes the reg - but everything else gets checked. Just did a 3 plane trip and everything made it no problem. I don't use any dive cases - just regular old suitcases so they don't scream dive gear ....

Me too, but on the return trip, I check everything I can, except my computer. Sometimes, I still have to lug my reg with me, if I don't have enough room to pack it in checked luggage.

I carry on everything, once I got a backplate and wing I was able to fit my entire set up between an Akona carry-on roller and a small backpack. Before the backplate, I would just carry on my camera, reg, computer, and mask.

On my first dive trip there were a few lost bags in our group and it made me a bit nervous about checking gear on the way. On the way back, I'm not as concerned, I'll carry on valuable gear (computer, camera, etc.) and check the rest.

I'd suggest carrying on things you wouldn't want to be without. I have a tough time with masks and my current one doesn't leak, so that always makes the cut as does my computer and reg. I reckon I could rent a BC and wetsuit if need be, so I'd check them if I didn't have room to carry them on. It's all personal preference and depends a bit on what, if any, gear you're particular about.

Carry on mask, regs, computer. Check everything else. Bring American Express card in case luggage is lost.

I put everything but my fins and unimportant misc stuff in carryon. My BC goes first with my regs, camera housing, and mask inside it. Then lights and pricey items are placed where they'll fit around it and a 3mm wetsuit goes on top. All that fits comfortably in a standard sized carryon when packed right. In a small daypack (bookbag) I put my laptop, a day or two of clothes, and personal care items. The rest is checked. My mentallity is cheap, easily found and replaced items plus most clothes gets checked. The rest is carried on.

I also have a cheap digital fish scale I picked up off eBay for ~$15 that I weigh my luggage with. I've never gone over weight for carryon allowance or checked baggage.

I voted "carry on", because I carry on prescription mask, computer, regs, camera gear, and canister light.

But backplate, wing, fins (and booties) and empty pocket weight belt get checked. Wetsuit gets rented at the other end. Tanks and weights are always provided...
