I have a High Sierra rolling duffel bag. Tough as nails and fits everything I need for a diving vacation.
For the boat, I'm still using my trusty Scubatoys mesh duffel. Very durable, a lot more so than I thought it would be! -Brandon.

Whatever you end up buying, don't bring it on the dive boat with you. Do what brandon suggests, use a mesh duffel boat bag.
If you choose take it on the boat, get your stuff out quickly and stow it somewhere out of the way. Those things take up waaaaaaaaaaaay too much room... |

I have the Akona AKB-144. It has held up well for at least 250k miles of air travel, though the zipper over the roller handle is completely broken, and the bag itself tips over when fully loaded.
I like dive bags - they are built for our gear and generally can take a decent thumping. I know people don't like bags that scream "Dive Bag - Steal Me", but I don't really see the logic in it. If you take your regs and computer as carry on, as most of us do, then it is highly unlikely that anyone is going to want to go after your funky wetsuit, your big fins, and your as large BC. They aren't easily hidden and aren't nearly as valuable second hand. If you manage to get through my lock and get items as large as that out of an airport w/o being noticed, then good on ya' - you've got a future in thievery. |

I also have 2 of the roller duffles I bought at Sams club (One for camera gear, One for scuba gear). They have survived 4 trips to Indonesia with multiple connections, but are definately showing the wear and tear of the trips. I always use nylon zip ties to tie the zippers together, and then put duct tape over the zipper tabs so they aren't as likely to get caught on something while going through baggage handling

My Wife and I are volunteer aquarium divers and have to lug our gear back and forth all the time. I recently bought a XS Scuba mesh gear bag with wheels. That really works well. The mesh is nice to help dry out the gear and the wheels have really helped take the stress off of my back !!!

My first dive bag was an Oceanic that had wheels, but also turned into a big backpack (with a small detachable backpack that zipped to the outside). I thought this would be smart and handy while traveling. In the end, the bag was just too small and so heavy that I just wheeled it around anyway.
Like the others who've been on a dive boat where everything gets wet, I moved on to an Akona wheeled bag. I am not sure of the model number, but it's all mesh and it's one of their larger bags. (It does have two compression straps to scrunch it down if you don't need the extra space.) It is fairly basic looking and it holds a lot of stuff - while breathing easy. I would not say it'd be the best for securing anything while traveling, but for basic home-to-dive site use, it does the job. |

I got my monster size Akona for free with my monster gear purchase (buy $3k worth of equipment, get a $250 gear bag free!). It's been a good bag, but way too heavy to fly with. I mostly use it for boats (the big ones that have room to stow them, not little boats), because beach dives I use a simple ActionPacker, smaller boats I use a mesh bag, and for flights I use regular lightweight luggage.
I recommend the Samsonite F'Lite hardside luggage for air travel. Roomy, tough as nails, doesn't scream "steal me", not terribly expensive, works equally well for non-scuba travel, and the case itself weigh less than many soft-sided bags (11lbs). On sale at Irv's for $150. And available in Lime green, sky blue and bright pink if you want ZERO chance someone will grab your bag by mistake. LOL I think Walmart and Costco both have some knock-off versions that are even cheaper. Last edited by CompuDude : 09-20-2007 at 02:15 PM. |
