I don't mind renting fins etc either, but it sucks when they are stolen. I hated my first set of fins, but I still paid a hundred bucks for them, so it's aggravating for someone to just rip them off. I actually can carry them on by using a snorkeling bag as my 'personal item' but it's not the most comfy bag to carry since the straps aren't padded at all. I figured someone had probably figured out a better solution by now, but it seems the choices are either take your chances with check in, or basically what I'm already doing.
is this or this more like what you are looking for? They do have the fin strap down feature and they are carry-ons.....

That's a really nice looking bag, but definitely not carry on size. Are you worried at all that being obviously a scuba bag, your bag may be gone through and things stolen? Have you ever had any issues with that?
Sorry, didn't get you wanted a carry-on... I always take my reg., computer and compass with me and check in the rest.

try this, same idea in a carry-on...

when you have a bag like that for a trip do you bring a second mesh bag to take your gear to & from the boat?

I carried on my gear (all but fins) last Sept going to Provo. I was also worried about my gear getting safely through Miami. I bought a new dive bag designed for carry on use. By the time it was packed, it was too big to put in the overhead comparment. I ended up using my old wheeled carry on. I got all my dive gear (except fins), a swimsuit, dive skin, toothbrush, & change of clothes in it. It worked out great. The bag is just a big cavity and abut 12 years old.

That's a nice bag, and only weighs 6 pounds which is great. I think I may order this.

I would definitely take another bag for the boat. Small six pack boats don't have a ton of room for bulky bags to be stored so you need something that can be stuffed under the bench. I've seen this bag in person, and it may possibly fit a set of dive gear, but there's no way you're getting any clothes or anything else in there with it.

Unfortunately, I have too much gear that I travel with to possibly get it all into a carry-on sized bag. So I carry-on what I consider the most important stuff. Reg, computer, mask (I use a prescription mask), camera and a dive skin. Everything else is check in.

i just have some giant mesh bag i bought from an employee... im a big guy, so i have a large wetsuit, fins, bc (except now its back to my diverite so it smushes up)

i used to have, and i promote, for "average size divers" the akona bag with the zip side and drawstring top. the zip allows for easy insertion or removal of gear... dries reallywell..

I wear a 5x suit and xxl fins, don't think I can get any bag to hold all my gear for a carry on.

I have had an Armor bag for over a year. I use it for dive travel as well as business. The best part is that it has a cover that goes over the bag and snaps with a strap down by the wheels. This protects all of your zippers and hides the fact that it is designed for dive gear. I'm sure this is a coincidence, but in 4 trips this year with the cover in place, the TSA has yet to pull the cover off and inspect the contents. Every other bag ends up with the TSA paper inside stating that it was inspected. This bag will hold 2 sets of fins, my BC, 2 piece 5 mil wetsuit, mask, snorkel, dive light, wreck reel, dive skin and a few sets of shorts/t-shirts, in addition to gloves, hood and booties. Scuba Diving did a review on it some months ago. From the hotel, I remove the cover and roll it right onto the dive boat!
