You can keep your regs in a plastic grocery bag just fine. No padding needed. How much padding it needs totally depends on what kind of abuse it is expected to take in transit. If you are checking the reg bag as standalone luggage on a plane, I would want a HUGE amount of padding for when heavy stuff gets put on it. Also, if it is attached to, or on the outside of, a bigger bag, the same thing applies. However, if you're just putting a small reg bag in a bigger case with other stuff around it, you probably don't need as much padding.

I find a small case with minimal padding is good for travel, because I carry mine on in a backpack, so I don't want anything too bulky. YMMV.

I've got that same bag. It works fine, but I don't use it much- The regs just go on top of everything in the plastic tote.

If I were traveling, I'd use it.

BTW, I paid about 50% more at the LDS than ST sells it for. That was before I knew about Scubatoys.

I'm looking for a reg bag, I'm thinking about the atomic bag since it's the regs I use. Would I get certain (ugly) looks having certain brand regs and using another brand bag?

if you have a reg bag that isn't well padded, if you get a hands on a sheet of the "blue foam camping matress" and you cut a coupe of sheets to match the size of the reg bag you can add some padding to the case.

But it is what we have come to expect from ST.

Since you use a rubbermaid tub, you maybe interested in this thread.

Do folks generally keep their regs coiled up in those bags when being stored? To me it seems that the regs have to be coiled too tight. Thoughts?

Loosely coiled. Make sure there is no strain on the hose to accomplish the coil, and all is well. A 1' circumference should be plenty to keep things loose.

I've always hung my regs. UK makes a BC/Reg hanger that works great with my gear rack.
