Well I've traveled all over with just a duffel and never had any problems. Then again I don't have to carry my wifes stuff either. I also check my bag all the way to the destination when traveling if at all possible avoiding having to schelp it around. If I do have a long schelp I use carts never ran into a problem where they didn't have one. I don't know what good wheels do you though when you have all those stairs you mentioned. As for carrying your stuff around hotel well I usually use the bell hop. If it's going to and from a boat then I use mesh bag which doesn't have wheels even if I did bring a wheeled travel bag.

As I also stated if you want wheels go for it I chose the weight savings. I also work out on a regular basis so I guess a bag under 44lbs doesn't seem like much to me so to each his own.

I use the same method as Chinacat46.

I use a MountainSmith duffel that I got for cheap on REI's outlet website. I took everything that I needed or thought that I would need to Little Cayman and didn't have any issues with their weight restrictions.

Those who brought traditional wheeled scuba bags had overweight charges and I was not inconvenienced by the lack of built-in wheels.

Look at all the pictures, as the initial picture doesn't show the drop bottom. (I think it may be from another model) The drop bottom is great for fins, boots, etc.

It has wheels, and can also be used like a backpack. This is great when I have to schlepp my gear, AND roll my wifes' gear through the airports. At $70, the price is right. It will hold all our gear (including mesh backpacks for the dive boat), but I still put our reg bags in our carry on's.

Regards,

Gary
i gotta say, almost 2 years later i'm still using this same bag and love it.

Maybe try an Army surplus store. A mate got me an Army dive bag thats great. Perfect size, waterproof and tough. Not sure how much they would be in store, but maybe worth a look.

Get a duffel with wheels and a smaller backpack to evenly distribute stuff over both shoulders. Try to avoid one-shoulder designs.

When it comes to light weight, durable roller duffels, I am a big fan of Stahlsac. Great bag. If you don't mind schlepping, the Northface Basecamp bags are fantastic and will keep your clothes/gear dry in a tropical rainstorm when your bags are left out on the tarmac.

check out walmart. roller duffles. ST has some large bags too but they can get expensive. another good internet site to get bags is scuba.com. i bought a few small items there. i just saw they have a rollerbag for 100 dollars. looks halfway decent.

I've used an Eddie Bauer rolling duffel for several years but I'm looking at replacing it with a lighter rolling bag or backpack. My last trip I was a few pounds over & had to unpack a few items & put in my already stuffed carry-on.

We have used a Deep See rolling duffel. Lots of room for 2 sets of gear not badly priced. Recommend them highly
