Yep...if the airlines would only hold up their end I'd be glad to check my carryon.

But, for example...the last boat we were on had 9 divers....6 of them had had something stolen out of their bags in the past. It's not enough that the airlines regularly mishandle or lose luggage, to top it off the handlers are rifling thru for goodies.

Anymore your going to have to gate check that bag. Just have to change or some color for when you get to baggage claim. I've gone to a hard bottomed safety orange "work" bag. Ugly as sin and had to modify it, but you can spot it from the next county.

I'd say if it's packet to the max you may have some trouble it is a bit large for some carriers.

Lightbulb Luggage trick!

I have pushed the limits of carry on as well. I try to use an old magic trick called diversion, or mis-direction. Keep the wheely more or less behind you, have something in your hand to wave in their direction. Ask a question or make a comment at the right moment, smile and skate thru. Be quick in the isles and stuffing your things into the over head, and don't smack folks with your oversize on the way down the isle and you should be fine.

I am constantly amazed at what is allowed to go in the plane. It is a hit or mis sort of thing depending solely on the mood and disposition of the gate/flight crew. worst case outcome is a gate checked bag, so why not bring it like you were meant to and go from there?

I refuse to check my gear, period. I've had my bags gone through multiple times, fortunately nothing taken. My thought is if someone wants to rifle through my gear and computer, they can do it in my sight.

On that note, has anybody had to pull the "this is my jacket/coat" card with a stew? I've got a mesh duffle that I'm going to stuff everything into for my carry on, and I'm afraid they're going to tell me to check it because of the BCD. Anybody threatened to wear the BCD on the plane as a jacket, since you're allowed one and it conforms to the anatomical requirements for one?

It does surprise me what people get away with. I tend to be the one that always get caught. Maybe its my guilty look.

hmmmm...BCD as the new style in jacket?....it occurs to me that to the lay eye, it might also look like a strap on bomb. Perhaps then not illiciting the reaction you might desire!
