I have the Zeagle Zena, my DH has the Zeagle Escape - never had any problem with losing weights - hard or soft. I finally got the pouches because it was easier to have my weights organized and easy to slip them in. DH hasn't used the pouches yet, but just got some for his birthday.

You run the risk of dropping wts. without the pouches...not a good thing. For the small extra price you have the piece of mind. If you were ever having to use soft wts. then you would have the pouches. I have at times seen folks selling used ones on Craigs List//Ebay and forum classifieds.

An advantage of the pockets other then to keep weights falling out is it makes it a heck of a lot easier finding your weights if you have to drop them - whether it be in practice or a real emergency. Also, if you use multiple weights in each pocket - it'd be easier to consolidate them into the pouch and just remove 2 pouches instead of several weights . Just a couple more things to think about.

I have heard of rare occasions when 2 lb weights will fall through without pouches. Generally those were with soft, not hard weights. That being said, and I own a brigade, I think the pouches are well worth the little cost and they also make it much easier to remove all weight from the BCD as well.

They can also be helpful if you want to remove them to hand up to the boat captain/DM before before getting back on... just like you would with a weight belt.
