Al backplate weight
I've posed this question on an Aussie forum and have received a number of differing responses so I figured I check with the learned STF members (note: major suck up here ie:
)Anyone know what weight I should assume for a Halcyon Aluminum backplate (rigged) underwater? I currently allow 6lb for my SS B/P but have no idea what to assume for the new Ally plate. |

The Halcyon AL backplate is 2.2 lbs, that's the plate only. The Halcyon steel backplate is 6 lbs, that's the plate only. Your difference is about 4 lbs. But you could say it's 3.8 lbs if you want but the difference is minor. The harness and D rings aren't normally counted in the weight as it's so little, but I think I saw somewhere that it's about a pound. Without knowing what your current backplate is I'm guessing at the 6 lbs, my DSS plate is less than that and the Halcyon is more as I posted above. There are other brands too, but most seem to hover between 5 and 6 lbs, and al plates seem to fall in the 1 to 2 lb range.

Looks like there's a consistent theme here (thank goodness) which matches the response from Halcyon received overnight.
"For the Al backplate underwater it would be the same as on land - approximately 2 lbs." & "With your STA and such on the aluminum plate, 4 lbs. Your SS plate alone is just under 6 lbs, with the STA it's almost 8 pounds" |
