Go get your certy first. Use the rental gear they supply and after you get certified, you will at least have an idea if your going to stay with diving and how far you will go. Between now and March gives you plenty of time to research and check out everything. The gear you have listed is great gear and will suit your needs. Nothing worse than buying gear to see something or find out it won't suit your needs later. Talk with others and read some of the forums under equipment in this site and see what other equipment is out there, and opinions. Althought I do think it is a great idea to take a course using equipment you will use after so you can get used to it, but still you have until March to get it. I wouldn't run off and buy anything untill you explore all avenues. Also if you wait until April you can save a few more bucks and have more to play with! Just an opinion.

At his size he will probably have to buy a wetsuit and maybe a bc,I would wait on buying all your gear until you get certifyed and some dives done, too many people end up buying their gear twice by not knowing what gear to buy the first go roumd.

I'm a fairly new diver. I would try to rent, your ideas about diving and what you would like to dive in and with may change a bit after you have gotten in the water a few times.
I'd recommend contacting a few LDS or the operator who will be doing your OW checkout dives with you and seeing if you can't rent equipment. Some of the bigger operators should have a wider range of sizes. I did my OW dives in Cozumel and there was a big guy on our boat who was able to rent, but it was a big operator that was used to serving anyone and everyone. I'm guessing that if you are in Indiana you may be traveling to a warm water destination and perhaps using one of these bigger operators? No reason NOT to buy a wetsuit up front. Renting a wetsuit is NASTY to me, so I bought a shorty before I did OW. I figured I could always use it for sailboarding and skiing and other things. In hindsight, I wish I had just bought a full suit. I never thought I'd do the deeper water dives in NC and I am. But I like having both as I'm hot natured. Have fun!!!!! |

I don't mean to offend anyone but 440 lbs is a lot of weight to carry even if you are 6 ft 4. I have a dear frend who is 6,3 and unfortunatly is now exceeding the 500 lb point he cant go on short walks or enjoy any physical activity. I have been trying to get him to keep his weight under control since he was a small 260 pounder as time passed his stamina decreased and his weight incresed. It may be advisable to get into a training regime to help with the physical demands of SCUBA. I notice My 197 lbs is a lot for my 5 ft 10 frame to carry. Good luck
