STA or not STA
I am currently going through the transition from a Zeagle Ranger to bp/w. I got a Zeagle ss plate which by the way has a great finish, and I ordered from ST a Zeagle Hog harness.
I am thinking about what wing to take and I am considered Frog Indigo. I found a very good deal at Indigo Wing Only - Frog and with the exchange rate of the British Pound make it more interesting. Here is the link of the manufacturer FROG DIVE GEAR I am confused about wings which need STA and wings which do not. Apart from the obvious weight issues between them, what about the position of the cylinder cam bands. If I understand correctly, with STA the cylinder seats higher on the plate (is this true?). Doesn't this create a less optimum position for the tank?e.g. more drag since cylinder is more high than without STA? I hope that makes sense, what I am saying. Any comments on the wing? Thanks, |

If you need the extra weight from a STA, need the STA to attach tank straps, or the wing requires a STA then go with the STA. It should not move the tank out much compared to a STAless rig. Based on the two links provided it looks and sounds like that wing will require a STA. If you don't want the STA and don't need the extra weight, then look at other wings that do not require a separate STA. Just make sure the tank strap slots on the plate and the wing line up OK (or do a little modification of the plate).

I don't think it's a function of the wing but of the plate. If your plate does not have the slots for the cam band to thread into then you have to use an STA. Most have the slots now though. Not sure what you mean by "seats higher". If you mean vertically as in tank rides higher up on your back, I don't think that is the case, at least not with mine. I have all the range I need to move the tank up and down within the straps. If you mean it extends farther out away from your back, that is true but it's a very small amount. Not enough to make you unstable IMO.
You can always try without the STA and add it later if you need it. Biggest reasons for the STA is stability and ease of changing out wings/plates. Without the STA you'll have to unthread and remove the cam straps to disassemble. If your tank is secure and doesn't shift without it, and you don't need to disassemble wing/plate often, then you might not need the STA. The SS STA also adds a few pounds weight.
