This is just a wild thought. Do you really need an STA?

I dive a DR pb/w. I do not use an STA. The tank is held to the plate by the tank straps. I do have to make sure it is lined up straight before tightening the bands.

KISS principal?

Depends on your backplate and wing and how stable the tank is w/o an adapter. Personally, I use an STA to get the first stage a little further away from my head. KISS is nice, but comfort and tank stability are also good things to have

Put a rubber washer between the regular washer and plate. When you tighten the wing-nut down this should grab and stop the rotation.
Cheap and easy to replace........

I mount the cylinder low enough that the 1st stage does not hit my head. I have made the mistake of mounting it higher - ouch.

As for stability. I have small DIY stoppers installed on each side of the cylinder. They do not hold it out away frm the backplate. But, they do help keep things lined up. YMMV

There are a thousand ways to skin a cat. I am just pointing out meathod #729.

As for the wingnuts loosening up...Why not replace them with nylock nuts?

Yes, now you need a wrench. But, really, how often do you put them on and take them off?

Oh I get what you mean.
And now I remember, I actually had the same problem and asked the same thing when I first bought my mini sta!
Don't worry, once its on the tank it won't move around

Well I guess that's the key question. If you dive the same rig all the time and can pack it assembled, I would do it your way. But if you often swap out wings/plates like I do then it's much less hassle to undo a couple of mini-STA bolts than to remove and rethread the cam straps through the buckle, wing, and plate.

I have those mini-STA things and it's not a big deal but I will probably just go with a one piece STA soon. It's not much added weight and is less hassle.

It's arguable that a STA is simpler than no STA. Keeps everything together as one unit, the wing is less floppy, etc. And MUCH simpler if you switch between singles and doubles with any regularity.

A STA is simply a slab of steel with two bolts, just like bolting on a set of doubles. Not exactly complicated.
