Whats the difference in these wings
I am looking for a Doubles Wings right now. I currently have a Oxycheq Sig Series 30# wing for singles that I love so I am really looking at Oxycheq for doubles. I came across these two different wings and just curious what you guys have to say about them...
Oxycheq 70# wing for doubles Oxycheq Vertex wing for Doubles Now I know that there is an obvious lift difference. I do not think that I need 70# of lift, but that price is pretty darn good. I do not think that the Vertex is that badly priced either, although I have seen it a little cheaper elsewhere. I have heard good things about the Vertex. Now I am not going to spring for the Extreme series because I do not think I will abuse mine to that point. If I ever do then I may consider switching because I do think that the extreme series wing are pretty incredible. Edit: I forgot to mention that I am just doing Rec diving a the moment. Twin Hp 120's with an al40 pony. SO no big stages or anything like that yet. Edit: So I am curious as to what you guys know or think about these two wings. Thanks Phil Last edited by skdvr : 02-25-2008 at 08:35 AM. |

Look at the shape of the wing, you can see where one would give more lift lower and the other is more neutral. So what you need depends on how your body needs lift. To be honest, many divers need lift over the lungs or even at the head.
My DSS Taurus wing is designed like the 70 lb wing except it's a 360 design. I would say you will find the ~50 lb range to be more usable for you but it depends on what you need lift wise for the drysuit. That's easily done by figuring out how much lead you need to make it neutral in the water. Next time you're in the pool, if you have not done it yet put on your heaviest under garment and drysuit and jump in. Have somebody hand you lead until you're neutral. That tells you how much additional lift you need if your drysuit suffers a total failure. Add that figure to the figure needed to float your rig. Add a few more lbs and you've got the wing size you need for your personalized situation.

I'd say 70 lbs is way too much, unless you are doing some VERY hardcore tech diving with multiple stages. It's going to be a monster wing that adds a lot of drag... ok if you actually need that much lift, but general advice is to match the wing with the need, and not buy too much. Bigger is not really better. I'll admit that's a pretty killer price, though, so I can see why you're tempted.
I have the OxyCheq Vertex 360 (55# lift) and it's a fantastic wing... I'd recommend it without hesitation to pretty much anyone. |

Is there diving close to San Antonio? If so I may have to try to pack some of my stuff in the truck. Thanks Phil |

Comal River is about a half hour away. It may be easier to wait till you get more settled and go hit that or one of the lakes. Lakes are cold and bad viz right now. If you ending up bringing gear this time, give a holler so I can get things set with the wife.

Cold and low vis does not bother me at all... I will let you know if I am going to bring gear or not. If my wife goes with me I probably will not bring anything down. If she decides to stay home I will bring a drysuit and everyting else except maybe tanks. Unless there is not a place to rent tanks from then I may try to squeeze one or two tanks in the truck.

Single tanks are plentiful. The water will be low 50's in the lakes, mid-70's in the Comal. I dive year-round.
