I was in PR last month and wanted to check out this dive spot called Mona Island--referred to as the Galapagos of the Caribbean. I couldn't find a charter that was going to Mona but did find one that was heading out to Desecheo Island.
The island is located about 12 miles off the North West coast of Puerto Rico and is uninhabited. The diving out there was amazing. Vis was well over 100ft at both spots we dove. If you are ever in Puerto Rico I highly recommend checking this site out. ![]() |

Yes, when we were in Puerto Rico, we drove all over the island and the diving out of Fajardo is awesome. But Desecheo Island is very intriguing. We did not end up diving it but read some great articles while we were there.
There was a group of hikers who lost a man on the island, due to a "sink hole" on land, so take into consideration, this is an uninhabited island in the ocean. It will have a great amount of current and large encounters. (hmmmm... most likely the draw now that I think about it) |

Well Divers I'm from the west area of Puerto Rico and the two best Diving spots on Puerto Rico are Mona Island and Desecheo Island. Mona Island is about 2:30 hours boat trip, but defenitively is time well spent. The Diving is amazing, more than 100ft. visibility, great walls, abundant living corals. You can see Nurse sharks, Reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, rays, etc, etc. There's a small Island close to Mona called Monito Island, which is another diving treasure.
If you visit PR again don't miss the oportunity to go there. There's two operators that have trips to Mona, One is MONA AQUATICS, www.monaaquatics.com and the other is Adventure Tourmarine, www.tourmarinepr.com. Actually next Saturday we are going there!! Regarding Desecheo what The Gooch wrote is completely true. |
