Status of Galapagos cruises
First of all; not sure if where to put South America travel questions, so if there is a better spot please move.
Does anyone know the status of the Ecuadoran governments stance on liveaboards in Galapogos -- I read on the other board that the government had placed restrictions, but I haven't seen any updates in about a month.

As of the last time I checked, there are exactly two companies that are allowed to go into the Galapagos Islands--Hughe's and Explorer Ventures'. Allegedly this is because they are the only ones with their 'licenses' in order.
The key will be if Wolf and Darwin Islands are still part of the itinerary; without those, the trip is a waste according to one source I have. Explorer shows a sample itinerary on their web site without those options right now. Many tour agencies are taking a wait and see attitude. One has stated that the situation continues to be tenuous regarding if the extreme government limits on Galapagos travel will hold or remain in effect--there are legal challenges winding their way through the courts in Ecuador. As always, money may do the final talking in this situation. Without ecotourists coming in due to restrictions, revenues drop off a cliff and workers lose jobs and livelihoods...and the government starts losing tax and fee revenue as well. Other industries begin to suffer in a domino effect, with those workers (and voters) affected and...? |

The Aggressors are still on, for Darwin and Wolf as well. Spoke to them last week.

All yachts with trips booked are now allowed to operate as scheduled until December 31st, 2007. The itineraries include Darwin and Wolf islands.
Between now and December 31st, the Galapagos National Park Service will develop new regulations and permits for diving. The fishermen in the Galapagos will get priority for the new diving permits. So, if you are booked on a trip before December 31st, you're golden. After that, you'll have to wait for the new regulations to come out. |
