Hurricane Timing ~

APPROXIMATELY how long on the average does it take a tropical depression to become a hurricane and get to Cozumel or Caymans from the eastern Atlantic?
(Best guess-timates welcome~)

Wow... not a clue. If you are trying to base your vacation around a storm, I say just book it and go. I seem to book my Coz vacations 8+ months ahead of time right when the hurricane season is

Lots of variables, but my best guestimate, having recently stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, is 5 days.

A better question would be, if a hurricane hits the Caymans or Cozumel how long before you can get out there and dive again?

Answer: Call your charter service and ask.

I'm sure a lot depends on the strength of the hurricane. Tropical storms are not as big a problem, but both can get you as far as really good visibility for up to several days.

I always book around the season myself, but if I had already booked a trip I would go ahead with it and hope for the best.

That depends on a lot of variables. The TS that is in the Gulf of Mexico took three days to pass over the Cayman Islands. It has taken nearly week to get from just east of Jamaica to where it is in the Gulf. It all depends on the speed of the storm and what other weather systems are affecting it. There is another one on its way to the windward islands. You can look at the forecasting to get a general idea of where the track will take it and how long.

The thing is, it may not even get over there. Saying "on average" here wouldn't work because TS and hurricane paths vary considerably depending on conditions. It could take a few days, or up to weeks. The traveling speed and amount of time it takes for a TS to become a hurricane (if it even does) also varies. Just watch the forecasts and you'll get a rough idea if it's heading there and how long (and even that's not a guarantee sometimes).

I try to book around the season as well, but it never works out that way for me. As for how long it will take to get back out there, my experience is as soon as you can get there. I went on an Aggressor trip in Turks & Caicos just a few days after a major hurricane hit there and followed on to Miami. People routed through Miami didn't make it, so we had five customers on the boat for the eight crew members. Some sites were still nice, and you can't beat having such a small number on the boat. However, I found that a lot of the sites weren't as amazing as I was told. I really want to go back to see it in its full glory.

before booking a trip its always smart to make sure they will refund due to weather, mother nature is too unpredictable, how often have you seen a weather report that was wrong, unfortunantly hurricanes are the same way, no one really knows where they will go or when they will get there until just a few days before hand

Well, Dean looks to have taken five days. Its crazy when you are sitting there and a storm forms the day before you leave on a trip, like happened to us this week. We flew down to Cozumel on Thursday, betting that the storm would change course. Today we called its bluff and bailed. The latest we were hearing this morning when we booked our flight out was for it to hit sometime late Monday. Hopefully it misses Cozumel. But at this point you never know and you take the flights you can find and get out of there. I am spending the night in Charlotte on my way back to Denver.
