Diving in Cancun?

So, my wife recently got herself certified. Despite some horrid conditions in Monterey CA for her cert dives she passed with flying colors, and she's pretty excited about going diving again.

Now, we are both certified - but inexperienced – divers, looking for a nice “tropical” vacation. The key is that we were looking for a place to go where we can have diving as part of the vacation, not as the main purpose of the vacation. So, we have chosen to go to Cancun for a week or so in January (2009), with maybe only about two or three days of diving.

We've chosen Cancun as what we think would be a good mix of stuff to do, and also to get some diving in. I've heard that it's not the best place for diving, but, as I mentioned we were looking for balance.

Anyway, to make long story shorter, I'm looking for advice for places to dive, and - more importantly - a good operator in the area. As I mentioned, we're inexperienced, so that's the most important thing for us. Your suggestions and comments are much appreciated.

I dont have any real particulars to offer but you can easily make it to cozumel from cancun for the diving and stay on the mainland for your non-dive touristy activities. Best of both worlds?!?

Thumbs up

If ST can't help set up your dive vaca, I highly recommend Stacey at VC. Set us up with great prices and great service in Cozumel. The best thing is she is an avid diver and very knowledgeable. Sent us out all the forms before hand so everything was set and firmed up before we got there.

Look around on the forum, you'll find all sorts of advice. I went with Manta Divers in Cancun last summer, they were at least safe enough, but I felt that they were not hte most organized folks for the reef dives I did. That being said, they did a great job in the cenotes, ALex and Leif were great, we had a couple of good dives in the caverns, but I was not terrible impressed with the caverns. I prefer the warm colorful water of the sea. There are a couple good reefs and a nice wreck, the c-85, but it is at 85 fsw, which may be more than you are into as new divers.

Don't let anyone lie to you about it not being a good spot to dive. I do most of my diving in and around the Cancun area. I recommend going to this website where you will find great deals and great dive sites. His name is Paul Hensley and you have the option to ride an hour for some Cenote diving or hit the beach right there where he can take you to the best wreck dive in Mexico.
