Roatan and AKR in June

Going down to Roatan in June and staying and diving with AKR. I now this place has a good repuation. My main question is there any local beer/s there? I would rather buy beer before I get there than buy beer there.

Divingmedic,

well let me tell you, I was born and raised in Honduras and my father is the vice president of the only brewery in the country so I can probably answer your question. lol

There are 4 beers produced in Honduras:

1. Salva Vida
2. Port Royal
3. Imperial
4. Barena

Imperial is the strongest of all. Barena is very similar to a Corona. Salva Vida and Port Royal are the most common ones and Salva Vida is a beer that tastes great under a hot sun. Port Royal is marketed as a club-scene beer. It is by far my personal favorite.

You can find all of these anywhere in Roatan so I am not sure you would want to buy them ahead of time but thats your call. Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be glad to help you out.

Did not mean I was going to buy them a head of time, just when I got down there and not have to pay more for beer from the bar at the resort.

Thanks for the info. I might just buy a mix of the lot and try em all out.

Assuming you are staying on the Key, then its probably a good idea. The hike back to the bar on the hill is a pain.

Salva Vida

I don't stay in the resorts when I travel to Roatan. I stay at Mame Tree and dive with Coconut Tree Divers. I buy beers at the store and they are cheap, cheap, cheap. Coconut Tree has a LAST DIVE happy hour and you make a donation to the beer fund and mark off the beers you drink against your account....I can't remember exactly, but I believe the beers worked out to be around .75 cents each even cheaper.

Have fun, be safe...do take mosquito spray and Hydrocortisone cause the no seeums will get you and they itch like mad for us gringos.

That is fine and dandy if your not taking the family. I have to keep my ten year old occupied and something for the wife to do while I am communing with the reef/wrecks/critters.

Sounds like Roatan is far enough removed......

WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department on Monday warned U.S. citizens to avoid all nonessential travel to Honduras due to the "current unstable political and security situation" there.

It said the U.S. Embassy has restricted the travel of its staff within Honduras to necessary trips.

"There have been regular demonstrations at the presidential palace in central Tegucigalpa, and streets in the vicinity of many government offices are blocked by police or military," the statement said. "In general, the streets of Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula are quiet. Reports from the rest of the country indicate that calm prevails, although there have been cases of occasional roadblocks."

Not only is Roatan far enough removed, the State Department fails to tell you that these are peaceful protests in SUPPORT of the legal and constitutional removal of Zelaya. Things are normal (read sunny skies, cheap beer, and great diving) on the Bay Islands. Go an have some fun.
