Bonaire trip Apr/09
Many 1st's. Viz was about 40'. Everything, was in full spawn mode, all kinds of stuff in the water, many, many stingers of some kind. Tons of juvie fish life. Turtles everywhere. Rays and a 6' nurse shark! No bugs, lotsa hungry iguanas! 1st time being dive-bombed (un provoked)by damsels every dive!!! Filter feeders out everywhere.............including a manta! Did you know Dons feeds the Tarpons nightly with their fish scraps? Quite fun to see. Lousy with seahorses, and nudis..........everywhere. No green morays, but lotsa spotted and sharptails. Angelfish everywhere, including Queens, and very approachable, as they were feeding voracioulsy on sponges. Large schools of Jacks. Octos out day and night. I think the effect of Omar has begun a regeneration of the reef, it's a natural thing......just my opinion.

Sounds like things are getting back to normal. We were down there last December and told that they lost a lot of their eels due to a disease that went through (something about some illegal sewer discharge, but that has been corrected).
We dove a lot off Bari Reef and there are huge tarpin (especially at night) that swim with you. We ate at Don's and they do feed the tarpin with all their scraps. Sounds fun, can't wait to get back. Snagel |
