Personally don't/didn't find food cost high on Bonaire. Not cheap but you can eat very reasonably if you want.
also there are applications that will track airline price changes. I use YAPTA but I am sure there are others. Bonaire seems to be getting harder to get to. Never been but planning on going to Curacao next. So that would be one suggestion , then you can tell me what's it like :-)

Curacao is a place lots of vacationers go, it is busier and has many more people and cars than Bonaire. Shore diving is there but harder to get to the sites and they are farther apart. Friends of ours have been there and said they ended up only shore diving at their resort because of the hassle. Boat diving was good, similar to boat dives at Bonaire.

Bonaire is a place divers go, to dive, not much else there but diving. It has a much more remote feeling to it, very quiet and calm. Shore diving at over 100 different dive sites, steps from your vehicle. Some of the best diving in the Caribbean, and it is very easy diving at most sites, with little current, tons of fish....

So it all depends what you are looking for on your trip!!
