Going to Punta Cana for family vacation in August and have'nt read anything good about the diving there. Don't want to spend to much time trying to get to some other far off dive spot because my wife doesn't dive and stays behind waiting on my sons and I. I have to try to limit the diving time to keep the peace, can anyone shed any light on the diving there?

At the end of the day, you're still getting wet - so that's good. If you've done more than a couple of dives in the Caribbean you will soon recognize that diving in PC is not all that. The area is over fished and there is just not a whole lot to see. I would compromise - do a few dives locally and see for yourself (it's not that it is horrible, it is just not particularly great), and one day you and the family do a day trip out to Catalina island for a much better dive experience. Good luck.

I agree. I live here in the Dominican Republic and since we're a poor country, most coastal areas are over-fished (we don't have a fantastic government to protect the coasts either). Catalina is one of the few protected areas of this country, so you might get some good diving there. Also, try Caleta, it is beside the Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo. It's a protected dive park and there is much to see there. Actually, there are several sunken ships in the area (the Hickory, el Limón). I dove the Hickory with my sister and we loved it! I really was let down by the diving in DR, I love the Island for the R&R factor really enjoyed my vacation there. But I observed more sea life in one dive in the Cancuun area than was seen in five in the DR. Definatley stay in Santo Domingo for any dive vacation there of all the diving in DR it was the best.
