Cancun dive
Went to family wedding in Cancun 9/6-9/9. Dove one day 9/7 with Manta Divers. Owned by John and Mimi Dykes from Plano, TX. They were great to deal with. Picked us up from hotel, and had 5 divers, 1 DM, Capt., Asst. on small boat with cover. Swells were 4-5'. Dove C-58 mine sweeper wreck at 80ft max. first with lobster, spotted eagle ray, many barracuda, schools of fish inside aft half of ship. Current was pretty strong, but they said it can get worse. Really had to put your head down and kick when we cleared the corner. This was our first ocean dive that wasn't a drift dive so it was a little different experience, but the briefing by Marim(sp) was very helpful. The forward half of the ship was about 300 yds down current. There were many barracuda around as we drifted over. Spent only a short time there before I had used my air. Ascended along line for saftey stop. Water was about 80 deg. F @ 80ft. it felt like bath water @ 15ft. and the current was ripping. We waved like flags in a stiff wind. Wife and I both got queasy once we surfaced (waves and warmth I think).
Water only on the boat, but we brought along a snack, and felt a little better by second dive at El Tunel. This was a drift dive to about 40ft. over small coral with rocks and ledges. Marim said there used to be a tunnel to swim through, but Wilma whacked it a few years back. Still a very nice relaxing dive with alot of parrot fish, grunts, butterflies, a green moray eel, more barracuda, and our first nurse shark encounter. It doesn't seem that I read much about Cancun as a dive destination, but if you are in the area with limited time, I think it's worth the effort. I've got a few good pictures, but I'm not smart enough to put them on here.
Thanks for listening,
Perry
